Help...pain, weak, and discouraged

Recommended Posts

Hi All!

I am almost 4 weeks out and was cleared for Proteins like fish and chicken a week ago. Everytime I try to eat it hurts in my chest. Terrible, sharp pain which makes me quit. (I eat small bites slowly, and chew a lot.) The last few days I have only been taking in my Protein in shakes because of the pain. I feel weak...and discouraged as I haven't lost any weight in over 2 weeks either. I am scared I went through all this just to still not be able to lose weight...and be miserable. Any advice??

It sounds like gas related pains. Are you taking a heartburn medication (Prilosec OTC or some Omeprasol product) daily? It is VERY important to get this first thing in the morning every day for at least the first year after surgery (I still take one - habit I guess). Also, check with your surgical team to see if there are other things you be doing or addressing.

It will get better for you, and your new life will begin again!

I am one month post-op. I get nauseated after I eat anything lately so I'm back on Protein shakes. :(

Hang in there and call your doctor/surgeon. I do know that we reach a plateau around 4 weeks.

Start with one tablespoon of food. This was the feeling I would get if I tried to eat too much. Literally the food is backing up into your esophagus. Chew half of the tablespoon of food until it is the consistency of applesauce in your mouth then swallow. Wait a few minutes and have another bite. It should take you 30 minutes to eat a meal, minimum. Do not mix drinking with eating. But, also do check with your team. It could be something else.

How were you doing on liquids and purees/soft foods? Did the pain start happening when you advanced to denser Proteins? That much pain isn't normal...you could have a stricture, so you need to talk with your surgical team ASAP.

I would change the food to soft things like cheese sticks to start.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
