Hello,

I just finished my 6 months of medically supervised weight loss (hoop to jump through for insurance). I was banded in December 2007 and lost 100 lbs. My band was great at first but I began having problems with my band after about 3.5 years. I had horrible reflux and slowly ended up with almost all my Fluid removed and gaining back all but 25 lbs. I am very excited about having my band removed. My surgeon has recommended the bypass and says it's the safer option after having a band. I am OK with that and after reading more! It does seem like the better option for be due to the reflux issues as well.

Now I'm just waiting on insurance approval. I'm very excited and hope to have surgery in the next 6 weeks. YAY!

Anyone else out there on a similar timeline?

My timeline is somewhat similar - banded in 2006, lost 100lbs and felt great. Looking back now I can see where I started having problems with my band...it was way too tight for too long. Hypothyroidism and a pregnancy later I've gained it all back and then some. Now that all the Fluid is gone the reflux isn't as bad but my band is now useless. I've been working with a surgeon for almost 9 months now towards a revision to an RNY and I'm currently scheduled and waiting for final approval, YAY!

Good luck to you!

Similar timeline here as well. Banded in Feb 2008. Lost 80lbs, maintained for a year or so. Then the reflux and GERD started, and my Doc unfilled my band a little at a time. I treated getting fills again, but every time I did, relux and gerd returned. Gave up for a few years and just lived with an empty band. Weight crept back up.

This past August I started the process to get approved for conversion to RNY. I received my approval last week and am set for surgery the first week in March.

My surgeon said that this was a similar fate for many of us banded patients....unfortunately!

I have the same story, banded in 2012 had to have it removed in 2014 because of horrible acid reflux, so in 2016i got on my boyfriends insurance started my 6 months progress and dang he lost his job, so no ins to cover it, kelp doing the 6 months finished it and prayed the new job he got would cover it so he finally get a job and bang it covers it so his insurance started in dec 2016, and I had to do at his point was to submit my Paper work cause I had already completed it in August 2016, so excited my surgery is scheduled for Jan 24 getting the gastric bypass, sooooo excited and ready good luck on your upcoming surgery

I just saw my doctor today and discussed having my band/plication revised to a bypass. Same reason I see in many revision posts.....due to horrible reflux. I had my band/plication done in March 2013 and did very well for about a year and a half. I've put back about 30 of the 70 pounds I lost, and I'm nervous that I'm actually considering going through another surgery. My band has been empty for about 6 weeks and I'm also nervous that I will gain all my weight back. I haven't been on this site for a long time, but thought I would login to hear from and about others that have done this particular revision. My doc said that he would remove the band and do the bypass at the same time. I've read various schools of thought on this, but he doesn't seem to think it's an issue. Also, more simple when dealing with insurance.

Same band story here. [emoji1327] Banded in 2008. Couldn't tolerate fills. Hospitalizations. Lost 90 lbs but gained it back plus some. Reflux. Complications. I revised to bypass July 20th and have lost 109 lbs in six months.

This is encouraging to read. Banded in 2010. Started having problems last year--reflux issues. Most Fluid removed. Endoscopy done-found reflux, gastritis and a small hernia. Have now gained all my weight back. Surgeon removing the band on 2/8/17, but wants to let it heal for 3-6 months before performing another WLS to prevent any possible issues. I've been trying to decide bw RNY and sleeve. But have been leaning toward RNY. It's been around longer and I don't want to fail. I feel like RNY is more of a sure thing.

Has anyone had a revision without having the band? I had my gastric bypass in August 2013 and I lost 107 lbs but have regained about 20 lbs. I'm up and down right now but I'm thinking about a revision. I'm in Charleston SC if there's any mentors in my area, pls reach out to me.

I'm not in the same boat, but I know a couple of people who had their pouch tightened; reset. It made a huge difference.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
