Seraya 46 Posted January 18, 2017 Hi, I'm so happy to have found this forum. I've been doing a lot of research and just attended the informational session for my local program with my initial consult in 2 weeks. I really prefer the idea of the VGS over the bypass to try an minimize the issues that malabsorption can cause in the short and long term both medically and lifestyle wise. I thought for me it was a no brained until I learned about the connection between the surgeries and reflux. I have reflux and have been on low dose omeprazole (20 mg/day) for about 7 years. I don't mind having to take medication for it. I was wondering if anyone here had reflux before surgery and still opted for the VGS over bypass? Do you have any major reflux problems that are significantly worse than pre-surgery? I appreciate everyone's input. It's such a hard thing to work out when really, I know from my research that there is no single universal experience. Thanks!
TXJess 98 Posted January 18, 2017 My surgeon told me it depended on the type of reflux. I had bile in my stomach from a weak valve between my stomach and intestines. Losing weight wasn't going to fix it and the sleeve would make it worse. I had to do the rny . I was disappointed, but I had enough time to get used to it. If my reflux was just my stomach acid and my belly pushing it up, we could have done the sleeve, but not with bile in my stomach. They'll have to do the egd to tell what type of reflux you have. ocgirl15 667 Posted January 18, 2017 I took Prevacid before surgery for years and still do. I don't think it is any worse.... but if someone had told me I could have possibly cured it with bypass maybe I would have made a different choice. I am doing great and have lost 110% of my excess weight less than a year with VSG. So it is just for food for thought and something I wish I would have discussed in more detail with my surgeon. FunkyMunkyBrat 205 Posted January 18, 2017 I have reflux plus Barrett esophagus syndrome and had H. Pylori infection.. My surgeon said bypass and since I trust his opinion that's what I went with Munky
deb2571 70 Posted January 18, 2017 I know bypass seems a little scarey but it if you have reflux you really should consider it. I went with bypass because of acid reflux. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App
justabitunique 29 Posted January 19, 2017 I had the sleeve dec 14th. I've always had gerd and it is WAY worse now. I had an upper gi yesterday to make sure nothing major was wrong. Anything I eat or drink comes right back up into my esophagus. It's super painful Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App 1 LauraD84 reacted to this
