When am I allowed to do thing ?

Recommended Posts

I have a few concerns on when I'm going to be able to do anything. I know I can walk. But can't lift anything over 5 pounds. I'm in highschool and it's almost Mardi gras , and I'm in colorguard. We have long long long parades to march next month. But I'm worried that it will be just too much as soon as I'm allowed and fully recovered. Any advice or tips to let me know when you guys got fully recovered and didn't just feel tired all the time ? Thankyou !!

I felt really tired all the time until I was on soft foods and was able to get in more calories. If you are going to try to be physically active, I encourage you to try to get your Protein and calories in. I didn't do anything more intense than "brisk walking" until I was over 850 calories a day. Then I stepped it up to 1100-ish calories a day as soon as I could from there. I would say, for me, that was about two months post-op?

Hi Sweetie!! Oh wow, you are still in high school! Good for you for doing this now, your whole life is ahead of you, I'm so excited for you!!

The bad news is you HAVE to listen to your surgeons instructions because if you don't and you injure yourself it will take even LONGER to get back to normal. It can take up to 3 months to feel "normal" again. But you are young so I don't think it will be near that long.

What were your instructions about lifting from your surgical team/bariatric surgery group? That's going to be what you need to follow. For me it was an 8 week restriction. When was your surgery? Have you spoken to your parents about these concerns? You might not be ready to participate in the Color Guard events quite yet.

Good luck and just know, even if you have to skip a few things now it doesn't matter in the long run. You are going to be feeling so skinny and amazing so soon!!!

I was exhausted until about week 5 then everything changed. You need to speak to your team and follow what they say.

Best of luck

This is all really helpful !! But my surgeon said not to lift anything over five pounds. My surgery was in 12/28. And yes I've talked to my mom about everything ! And we just needed a little bit of help really seeing eye to eye on where other people were at and how they were feeling around month 2. Since that's when our parades will be. I figured already that I most likely won't be able to do the parades but that's okay everything will work out in the long run !! Thankyou so much for your help !

I was only able to lift 10 lbs until week 9. You have a very deep stitch that can really cause you problems if you don't follow the advice of your Dr.. For some, this deep stitch pops/heals within a few weeks, for me, it took 9 weeks and I wasn't advanced in my level of lifting, until that point. You have to remember that even though it doesn't look like you've had much done on the outside of your stomach, your insides have had severe trauma!! 80% of your stomach was removed and you have several internal staples. My Dr. said I have 3 rows of staples down the entire length of my stomach. You have to protect yourself. You MUST follow the advice of your surgeon or you could put yourself in jeopardy. Please be safe.

I would never put myself in danger ! It's good to know that people care , it means a lot! I haven't done anything yet to harm myself in any way! And of course I'm going to follow the doctors orders , I was just wondering what other people had to say because every doctor is different !

Band rocks! I was drum major of my high school marching band way back when. Of all the things I have done in my life, that will always be one of my proudest accomplishments!

Good for you for taking such mature steps to get to a healthy weight at your age. You should be so proud (and I know your mom must be super proud of you, too)!

Best wishes as you continue your journey.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
