Feel Hungry, Don't Feel Full?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm at 2 weeks, 5 days, and things have generally been going pretty smoothly. I'm on purees, which I'm bored with, but I've been sticking to the diet. I've had no problems eating anything so far, although I did notice cream of wheat filled me up faster than anything else, and I couldn't finish my small portion.

My doctor told me to expect to feel full all the time following surgery. Instead, I've been feeling hungry since I was in the hospital even! I find myself thinking about food seemingly more often than before the surgery, maybe because before, as soon as I thought about food, I could eat. Now I sit around looking up recipes for things I can't eat yet. The smell of food will trigger hunger--just about any food smells amazing to me at this point.

Here's the thing: feeling discomfort or pain in my chest might stop me from eating any more, but it's not what I think of as being full. At least, it's not "good full." What I haven't had since the surgery is that feeling that something's 'hit the spot', that I've had enough but not too much, that I'm satisfied. Will I ever feel that way again? It feels like a trick, that I have to stop eating before I feel full. Will it get better once I can eat solids?

I haven't noticed any change in my taste in foods so far--not sure if everyone does. So far, everything I've eaten has tasted just the same as before, and I crave the same things.

@@StarPower You will feel 'full' and/or 'satisfied' again...you won't feel any of the true restriction of your sleeve, though, until you're eating denser foods. The pain goes away (which is awesome!), and you'll learn what the 'I'm done' feeling is like. Mine is like a darned STOP sign goes up and I'm done.

Hi i know just what u mean . am 11 weeks post op . does improve once u are on solids but i still dont get that nice satisfied feeling . if im not careful just ine mouthful too much and im sick or in a lot of discomfort. I find i am more aeare of nutrition in food than i used to be because of small portio. Still struggling with things like meat tho which are the really filling things so maybe that will imprve hope so so stick with it it does get better but slowly dont rush.

Just a thought, could be acid reflux. I agree that you'll be feeling much fuller on solids but I had bad acid reflux for the first month and thought I was hungry all the time because the 2 feelings were so similar.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
