How did you research your surgeon's background?

Recommended Posts

I started my research by looking up which hospitals and doctors accept Aetna. I found an Aetna Bariatric Center of Excellence within a few miles of my house. I googled each bariatric doctor in my list, looked at their websites, watched some of their youtube videos and researched their credentials. I found a doctor who I liked, my appointment went well, the staff was very nice and they've been very organized. The doctor assured me he's done "thousands" of these SVG surgeries. He's also been rated as one of "NJ's Top Doctors" for the past 8 years in a row. Everything sounds good at this point. But still, I do wish I could find an independent source that could confirm the total number of successful surgeries this doctor has performed as well as any not so successful surgeries.

Can anyone provide some direction as to how I could find those statistics? Any reviews online are quite arbitrary and there are not too many of them.

Thanks!

If you check the OH boards, they have patient reviews of the various docs used. www.obesityhelp.com is the site.

I first found my doctor by recommendation from my primary care doctor. Since I value her opinion, that was a good start. She also had two people on her staff who had surgery with this doctor who were very successful. Then I went from there and just searched and searched. Looked at all the health sites who had patient reviews. Everything looked good and at one the meetings there were a lot of people from out of state coming to see him so they must believe he is good as well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
