Considering Gastric Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I am scared.

I keep going back and forth.

One minute I don't want surgery and the next minute I do.

It is stressing me out.

You will flip flop many more times even after you have the surgery. I was excited and then I got my approval and surgery date. Then I got scared. I understand I will probably get cold feet when being wheeled into surgery. And that I will question what the heck I've done to myself after surgery.

Major change is hard and daunting. But if it means I lived a longer healthier life, it's worth going through the fear.

I am looking at surgery sometime in August, due to my insurance mandatory waiting period.

The waiting period makes me angry, I don't understand why that is necessary?

They are hoping you'll give up or get impatient and pay for it yourself. Either way they wouldn't have to pay. Don't let them win!

Interesting, I had never considered that.

Do you think that might really be the reason?

I know insurance companies can be sneaky, but I would like to think they wouldn't do that to people.

That was my surgeon's suggestion. He says it has no impact on success with the surgery and is simply a hoop put in for people to jump through in hopes people will find another way. His self pay numbers have risen 50% in recent years as insurance company restrictions have increased. So in that respect it seems to be working.

Wow, that is not cool.

But, that does make sense.

I can see that happening to people.

People get frustrated and then give up.

Like I said, I had never considered that so thank you for pointing that out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
