Barium Swallow test?

Recommended Posts

I received a call from my surgeon's office just now stating immediately after my appointment with him next month he has me scheduled for a barium swallow test.Is this standard pre-op testing?

I had to have two of them before I left the hospital. They used it to check for leaks.

I had to have one post-op, the day after my surgery. It was the most miserable part of the whole gastric sleeve process. The stuff you have to drink is disgusting, and I had to lay on the table in very awkward and painful positions while they tested me for leaks. Ugh...I hope I never have to go through that again!

A pre-op one would be much better...at least I hope it would.

Good luck!

I had one pre op, it diagnosed my Hiatial hernia. Also had one post op to check for leaks. I did not enjoy them but there are worse things out there! Good luck [emoji256]

A lot of places make you done one. It's really nothing to worry about it just checks for hiatial hernias so if you have one that can fix it while they have you open it just had to do it last week it doesn't taste very good. But over all it was fast and easy to do

Its standard..and as already mentioned fast and easy. I got it the morning after my sleeve to check for leaks prior to heading home .. it sucked because it taste nasty but its only about two sips of it that you take.. its just that you haven't had anything to eat or drink in over 25 hours at that piont and then u have this test ....but look at the bright side.. u can drink Water after and its a test they do to check for leaks and then u go home sweet home!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
