I am ten days out and going to Vegas, would it be okay to have a shot or two? How long did you guys wait? I hear people saying they had a shot or two very early on.. just want to see what other people experienced.

I cut alcohol out of my diet at the end of the first month of my six month insurance-required pre-op diet program and abstained for a total of 9 months. I had a few drinks during a recent trip to Asia -- that was about 3 months post-op for me.

I had no trouble from it, and I lost 13 pounds during our 3.5 week trip. (But I do need to point out that we walked about 10 miles per day on this trip, so all of that extra exercise offset any effects from the limited alcohol I did have...)

At 10 days out, there is no way I would have consumed any alcohol. Your new stomach is still really raw and only in the beginning stages of healing. It isn't a good idea.

Browse around and I think you will see it is a VERY bad idea. Should be avoided until you make goal and are solidly into maintenance. You have invested thousands of dollars and time to get this done, don't F it up. However you are an adult.

Ask your doctor. They all have different guidelines for their patients. Your new stomach is not something to mess around with while it is healing.

I haven't had my surgery yet. But I know I will absolutely not be having alcohol during the first 12 months after surgery.

Have a bar tender put some Water and sliced lime in a cocktail glass for you. That way you have the look and feel of a cocktail. I did get this tip from one of the vets here ????

One shot will knock you on your ass and probably make you pass out. My first sip was a year after surgery and my doctor said that even that (a bit of wine) is pushing it. You will get SUPER drunk SUPER quick and...being so soon after surgery, your tummy can't handle that kind of thing. I would certainly not advise it but as @@OKCPirate said...you are an adult. I wish you the best of luck! Peer pressure can be the hardest thing to handle.

Years ago I used this tactic when I was on a strict diet. I was getting to a very attractive weight at age 22 and men wanted to buy me drinks - so the bartender hooked me up with tonic Water and lime.

I was told to wait at least 6 months, but the surgeon recommends waiting until you get to your goal weight

10 days is way too soon. You are not fully healed yet on the inside.

Wait at least a few months then it's up to you and your plan.

I had my first drink around 3 months out, it was fine no problems at that point. I'm currently 28 months out.

I'm two years post surgery and I tolerate wine very well. A little too well. :-(

I can tolerate beer but it makes me feel bloated so I don't enjoy it.

Hard liquor (which is >20% alcohol for me) I can't handle. I get very sloppy very quickly.

My suggestion to the original poster is to take a sip rather than a full shot at once. If you tolerate a sip or two, then do what you're going to do. But if you can't tolerate a sip, you definitely can't tolerate a full shot at once. Be careful. Good luck to you!

My dr allowed it at one month which is pretty aggressive compared to others. I waited until two months, had a couple sips of wine and was fine. I'm now just about six months out and have about two glasses a week. It does not impact me any differently than before surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
