Diet drinks and Artifcial sweeteners

Recommended Posts

Whats the deal with diet drinks? My doctors asst sent me a bunch of info when I signed up. Some of it had to deal with how diet drinks and artificial sweeteners making a person eat more. Anybody know any thng about that? One sweetener worse for you than others. Slmost every post about food on here says Splenda. Whats the big deal with Splenda? I personally have only used Equal.:waytogo:________________________________

Splenda is supposed to be better for you than Equal. Less side affects and all that. Equal is said to be very bad, studies suggest that it leads to alzheimers, is the same chemical compound as formaldihide, causes Migraine and many other bad problems. I am not a doctor, but I will not use Equal, I just dont care for the negative press it has gotten. I will use Sweet N Low first, it has been known to cause something in lab rats, but that is with huge mega doses, and I cant even remember what it is. But the point is, the doses given to rats is an enormous amount that humans would never take.

Splenda is supposed to be closer in chemical makeup to sugar, but with no calories. This is all just what I have read, I am not a scientist with first hand knowledge.

Freebig, with so much info to absorb, sometimes I need little "associations" to help me remember some recommendations. Re: artificial sweetners, I need to only use the ones that start with "S" (for sweeten)....not Equal or Nutrasweet, instead: splenda, sweet n low

You are right laurend, it has been linked to cancer in lab rats. However, that is when rats are given huge mega doses of saccharine. The comparison is that it would be like humans consuming pounds and pounds of it.

Splenda is basically glucose with a bunch of alcohols binded to it so the enzymes that break down glucose don't recognize it, therefore it won't get digested.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
