Pre-op diet....here I come!

Recommended Posts

So I start my two week liquid diet on Monday the 24th. I am so scared. It only took 3 days for my insurance to approve my surgery and that was back in August. I set my surgery date for Oct. 8 thinking that is so far away. Well guess what people, it’s almost here. I stay up at night just thinking about the liquid diet and what I'm going to eat and what I'm going to miss. I have been having that last supper syndrome, but not too bad. I have only been focusing on my favorite foods and not stuffing myself. Like I had to have a cheeseburger and fries from my favorite restaurant yesterday and I will have to get in McDonalds fries and a vanilla shake. I'll have to get in buffalo wings and some Mexican food of course cuz that is like my favorite. I need some cold stone ice cream and the list goes on. But all before Monday!! I have been practicing chewing for days and not drinking liquids with my meals. Do you know how hard that is? But I'm lucky; I have two of my favorite cousins doing the liquid diet with me. One has already had bypass but the other is doing it just to support me. That is so sweet. We'll see how long she lasts. Anyhow, thanks for listening.

i start my 10 day pre-op on the 24 too. i am doing the same thing, like almost in a panic, omg--what shoud i eat now that i wont be able to? i keep thinking i am doing horrible, but i havent gained any so it must not be. tonight my dh and i are going out with his brother and his wife to dinner and to the haunted houses. kinda like my last hoorah before monday. my bil and sil have NO idea that i am doing this though, they just think we are going out for a night w/ no kids. i am looking forward to it. we live in a small rural town and we going into the "city" in the neighboring state, so i get to eat at my favorite GOOD place...now i just have to decide which one that is!!!

best of luck on your diet. i am excited to start, it just makes it all real, ya know?

I’m on day 4 liquid and it has not been too bad. I get 4 slim fast high Protein during the day and 4 oz of lean meat ½ cup raw veg and one serving of fruit for dinner. Also up to 2 sf Jello. I was scared that I could not make it on that but have done well so far. I have found that drinking really really slow and chewing 25-30 times every bite helps. That and lots of sf gum. Also Water water water.

Wow! That sounds like a pretty awesome liquid diet. I, too, start mine on Monday, but here is what we get:

2 Fruits or 2 cups fruit juice

3 Servings (8 oz.) of cottage cheese or yogurt

2 Atkins shakes

and unlimited Surgar free Jello, popsicles, broth, coffee, and tea.

It kinda sucks that my husband just got banded 3 days ago and did awesome on the diet. Now the surgeon expects me to do as good (he said so). Ugh...A tough act to follow. Truth is though, I'm kind of excited about getting it underway. It means I'm almost there!

:whoo:

I am day 2 of my diet and feel pretty yucky today. My advice: if you are a coffee or tea drinker wean off it before you diet. It is one less thing to worry about. Drink alot of Water and take your time and enjoy what you do get to consume. Lots of positive self-talk needed.

Everyone is so positive, and that's a wonderful thing. I need positive to get me through this. I know some people my think I'm weak for worrying about this or having a hard time with this, but food has been my whole life for so long, it's hard to just go cold turkey. My diet now consists of total liquids. I can have 3 liquid meals per day, which mine will be slim fast or a cream Soup make with skim milk of course. Any other time of the day, whatever I eat has to be 10 calories or less per serving. I do suffer from migrains and hunger is one of my triggers, go figure. But my doc said if I start to get really hungry and feel one coming, I am allowed to eat a boneless, skinless chicken breast.

I am on day two of my preop diet and have been doing everything I'm supposed to. I drink: 2 - 3 Atkins shakes/day, eat cottage cheese and have had some low fat mozzarelly sticks. But I keep feeling this extreme fatigue. Does anyone else have this problem? Or answers?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
