I'm still pre-op. I'm scheduled for Jan 23. I had to see my dietician plus my surgeon requires his patients to attend 2 nutrition seminars as well. The nutritionist at the seminar told us to use the 30-rule. Drink 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after your meal...never with it. And to chew your small bites 30 times. Does everyone still do this or is this just a beginning thing?

  • It is a forever thing, as far as I know. I'm a year out and it still applies

I don't necessarily chew 30 times and I can't always not drink 30 minutes before eating. I never know when I'll get a break at work. But ABSOLUTELY 30 minutes after. It only took one time of forgetting. Results were not pretty!

Depends on your surgeon. I was told to chew well, but no specific parameters.

As to the 30 min before / 30 min after, my doctor told me to do whatever works for me, that there is no rule from his perspective.

I find that I am fine drinking right up to a meal, or not, but I'm almost always drinking to get fluids in, so I usually drink right up until I eat.

I generally don't drink for awhile after eating as it makes my stomach hurt. I don't really time it, but 30 minutes sounds about right.

I was told it was a forever thing, though if I need to be flexible it's the during and afterwards that is most important.

im 13 years out and it is a forever thing. I do sometimes drink right up to the meal depending on if I am doing good with my Water that day but never during or after. if it washes the food thro I will get hungry before the next meal.

The drinking part is forever. Maybe the chewing should be LOL. I have already swallowed food too fast and it has gotten stuck.

it is a forever thing. if i am dehydrated I'll drink up to 15 minutes before...but never sooner than 30 minutes after. it pushes food through your stomach too quickly and 1 or both of two things can happen. Dumping syndrome (trust me you don't want that) or it can make you hungry again quickly...don't think you want that either.

I was never told the 30 chews, just to chew my food well.

My surgeon said that at the soft food stage and on I could drink up to my meal, no drink during and 30 minutes after. He said that animals don't eat and drink at the same time , but he never met my dog. I sometimes get jealous of her!

This is a forever thing. If you have questions about this you should speak with your dr or nutritionist.

My surgeon ( and I'm only speaking for me) said it is ok to drink up to your meal, however absolutely not during or 30 minutes after.

His reasons: as others have said it will push soft food through but more importantly, if you have a Protein dense food like chicken, the Water will sit on top of it, instead of pushing it down it will soak into the Protein dense food and cause the upper part of the sleeve, which can stretch, to "outpouch". If this happens enough the outpouching will become permanent and you will be able to eat more food. This, of course, is the opposite of what we want.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
