First Appointment!

Recommended Posts

Hello All!

I was just wondering if anyone could provide me with information about the first couple of appointments with the doctors. I am going for my first appointment on January 16th to speak with the doctor, dietician, financial advisor and psychologist. I'm lucky that I get to meet with all of them at once instead of having to go back a bunch of different times! I'm not going to lie I am a little overwhelmed with having to meet all these people, but so excited to start this process.

I was hoping someone could share their first appointment story so I could know what to expect and what happens after the initial consultation.

Will there be a follow up appointment to schedule the surgery or do tests?

When do they schedule your surgery? (If doctor and insurance agree)

About how long does the process take from initial consult with all the doctors, dieticians, insurance and psychologist to determining a surgery date?

(Also my insurance does not require the 6 month dieting- BCBSIL)

I'm just not sure what comes next.

Thanks!

I have the same insurance and that is SO good to hear! I have pretty much the same exact questions that you do but I am glad that I found this!I am at the Insurance pre-approval stage. How long did BCBSIL take to authorize? Not sure where you are located, I'm in Portland, OR.

I have my first appointment on Wednesday 1/18! I also have multiple appointments the first day which I am thankful for so I do not have to take off additional work.

I need to be in the program for 3 months prior to surgery and hoping to learn lots through the process.

Can't wait to hear how the process is going for others.

I had Aetna which required 90 Day Supervised Diet where 1 pound would have ruined the Surgery. At first I thought it was a BS process. You do learn more about yourself and why you over eat. I replaced a lot of bad habits and lost about 60lbs from May 16 to my surgery 1/17. Learn more about you and what you mentally need to get ready. I'm a suler emotional eater so I eat hard, bit by the surgery date I got almost over it all and was eating 6 small meals a day under 1600 to 1800 calories a day. I learned so much from the process of juggling calories. The biggest help was S Health from my Android. It helped me out a lot.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
