Phentermine AFTER surgery?!

Recommended Posts

A good friend had VSG a year ago this month. She had her one year follow-up this week and hasn't lost any weight since a visit last month. She's 30lbs from goal and left the surgeons office with a Rx for Phentermine! Am I wrong for feeling shocked? I expected the surgeons office to go over diet, maybe suggest keeping a strict diet log and check back in two weeks, but never expected them to go straight to a diet drug. Has anyone ever heard of this or had this experience?

I have, the surgeon only prescribes it under certain circumstances. You friend is a year along and may be having trouble losing those "vanity" lbs.

I have heard of some doctors prescribing it several years out for regain, but not to help get to goal, no.

Look, people love to trash Phentermine on these forums, but I just look at it as just another tool in the fight against obesity. So what if there's several different tools needed to get there? If it's doctor supervised, I see no problem with it?

I also find it extremely hypocritical that people who have turned to major surgery to lose weight can poo poo a weight loss drug.

I've been maintaining my weight now for well over a year, but if for some reason I felt I needed to take these drugs to stop regain or take regain off, you bet your bottom I would.

I'm using the phentermine to try to get my weight down for my surgery and it helps, don't criticize people for using medications unless you're in their shoes, everyone's story is different.

Who criticized Phentermine or anyone who used or uses it?! My problem is with the docs not following up on her diet plan and not double checking that there wasn't another underlying issue instead of jumping to a drug. This is my FRIEND, I want her to have the best outcome possible with help in using the tools given to us. To my knowledge a diet drug can't be taken indefinitely, at least not safely so why not take a drug free approach first? THAT was my question I didn't ask to be bitched at. I really regret suggesting this site to an acquaintance, now I remember why I quit coming here. Best of luck to the non-assholes who can respectfully answer a question, the rest...

SERIOUSLY . No one has forced anyone to agree with an opinion. It was their personal take on the drug. I've never been anywhere online where people have the same thoughts and opinions. I'm not sure why you thought this site would be any different than any other online community.

I value other people's input..

Even when I don't agree.

I used phentermine pre op so I wouldn't gain after my band was removed but before I was sleeved. It really helped me to kick start my weight loss and adjust to a lchf diet as recommended by my dr and bariatrician. It totally curbed the head hunger I was dealing with in addition to giving me energy to start moving. It's not a long term solution but if it helps someone get back on track then it's another useful tool in the tool box. My drs practice allows it post op if needed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
