Completing a checklist

Recommended Posts

I've found a doctor but he will not see me until I've completed a long checklist. I've done almost everything on that list including a 6 month weight loss program. Last day of that program is 1/25/17. I need to go my mental evaluation and I will be ready to see the doctor. I started this journey at 412lbs. I weighed in today and I'm down to 365lbs. It could have been more but the last month and a half my weight loss plateaued. I neither gained or lost. I see it as a accomplishment to maintain. Any advice on what more can I do??

It is common to undergo many steps in order to qualify for surgery. Many of these steps are dictated by your health insurance. In my case it was around 10 months from my initial consult until I received the surgery. I went through the following steps.

Initial consult

Psychological exam

Meeting with nutritionist

6 month medically supervised weight loss program that included diet and exercise

Visits at the monthly bariatric support groups meetings.

Pre-op testing which lasted almost a day

A half day training class that discussed pre-op and post-op requirements.

A second round of pre-op tests specifically focusing on the areas they had concern with.

I recommend you do three things.
1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success.
2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery.
3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.

First of all, congratulations on your success thus far! What an accomplishment. I think you've done an outstanding job. I'm pretty sure they are wanting to see your commitment. Or possibly a requirement from insurance. My insurance is a 90 day deal. I'm not allowed to gain any weight, however, I'm not required to lose any. Once your psych eval is complete, you're prob ready to schedule your surgery. Stay focused. I think you've done your dues! Congrats again!

Thanks James & @@NEENEE! I'm trying. I have tried everything under the sun to lose weight. Now I have to or I can't keep my CDL with the new regulations. I love my job.

James, I gave up cokes about 6 months ago but I do like a lil taste every now & then. Water has become my best friend.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
