Had my surgery Monday and it's Wednesday and the pain when eating.... please help!

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery Monday afternoon and was discharged last night only because I'm a nurse and can care for my foley cath at home. That being a complication I don't even want to get into. But regardless everything I try to drink anything or a bite of Jello the pain is unbelievable. It doesn't matter the size either. Could be a small sip or literally enough to just coat my tongue. But the moment it hits my stomach I get intense sharp pains. And I have an unbelievable high tolerance for pain. Like I found out during pre-op testing I had fractured a rib but I don't remember doing it. Is anybody else have pain like this? And if so how long ones is last? This is just miserable. Thanks!!!!

You need to call your surgeon's office. You could have leakage, it could be any number of things. There is a lot of pain in the first few weeks but if it prevents you from even taking in liquid you need to call them. I'm confused why they let you go with so much pain still when ingesting liquid or food.< /p>

Nope, I didn't have that pain. Let your team know. They may want to look at your insession line.

I do know Jello is not on the liquid diet according to my bariatric team. It has substance. My rny was Tuesday morning. My expected release is Friday. Why rush it? We worked hard to get to this point. Agreed, you need to get to your Dr. Good luck. In fact, I just had my scan to check on leakage. I was good. Just got my catherter and drain out. Just started all liquid diet. Mine is going down fine with just sips. I hope you feel better soon. Paula

I had esophageal spasms every time I took the teeniest, tiniest sip of anything in the first two weeks post-op. They were very painful, but not excruciating to the point you are describing. I think you should call your surgeon.

They gave me Jello the night of my surgery so I think that depends on your surgeon. I was also allowed cottage cheese on full liquids the day after my surgery. However I agree the OP should call the surgeon.

Paula thanks!!! They gave me Jello at the hospital and it is normally found on a clear liquid diet so I assumed it was ok. I will say this, I'm just going to drink Water the rest of the day unless my blood sugar drops then I add a couple of grams of sugar to it to get it up. Otherwise just going to try and rest today and then back to the surgeons tomorrow.

What did they feel like? I think that may very well be it. I've been having a lot of hiccups too so that's making everything a tad bit more tender. But the get that tightness and constricted feeling with anything I swallow and sometimes it comes right back up.

Like a really tight, stabbing in the center of my chest. It was bad. But not so bad that I couldn't function. I also found that marching in place while sipping my Water helped a little.

Jamie that's it. How long did it last?

Definitely at least two full weeks post-op, then it started letting up gradually.

COLACE... day 3 once i pooped and tooted d horn life was so much better. Day1-3 were hell, 4 was so-so, today 5- i went for a walk, total 10 blocks, no pain, mild soreness. Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
