3 week Post-Op and Jonsing for a Cucumber salad!

Recommended Posts

So - I remember my nutritionist said no raw vegetables but I am dying for a cucumber and Tomato salad. OMG - with just a little lemon and salt. Tell me again why I can't have this? :(

We have the same surgeon's office, my surgery was done by Dr. LaMaitre.

I was dying for a pickle and i broke down and ate one at about 5 weeks post op. Just a few bites. I would wait a little longer to try anything like that.

Good Luck!

Because you have had MAJOR trauma to your stomach and it needs to heal! You have 3 rows of staples across the entire length of your stomach. Your small stomach cannot process and digest food like it could pre-sleeve. You have to give it time to heal. You MUST follow your surgeon's prescription (not recommendation), or you could put your health and life in jeopardy. This is a good time to practice your will power, as you are going to need it during this entire process. Every day I want something I'm not suppose to have and I resist. I can eat any texture of food that I want now, but that doesn't mean I eat anything I want.

Raw veggies are hard for your stomach to digest. Your stomach was literally cut all the way down the long side of it a couple of weeks ago. It needs time to heal before being put to that level of work. Also, cucumbers and tomatoes both have seeds, which you should DEFINITELY not be eating so soon post-op. They can get lodged in your staple line and cause abscesses, ulcers, and leaks.

lol, oh man... you DO NOT want to know how bad the bathroom trip is going to be the first time you have that AFTER you are cleared for it.

I specifically asked my NUT if I could blend raw fruits/veggies into smoothies and was told nope. Only cooked veggies or applesauce until week 4.

It is probably for the roughage or enzymes. Maybe. I would like to know also. What about blending it into a smoothie?

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
