Scared all of the sudden

Recommended Posts

After 9 long months of working through insurance hurdles and pre-op testing and classes and lots of waiting I am finally scheduled for surgery on Jan 25. But then last night I was overcome with fear and was considering backing out. What the heck!?! Anyone else have this last minute fear? I've read that it's common to have buyers remorse right after surgery but no one ever talks about it before... I really am excited about starting my journey but I also can't shake the fear. Any advice?

YES!! I became terrified the closer it got. I just told myself I was doing something that would change my life forever. Even the morning of surgery when they were prepping me I was almost in tears and I told my mom I wanted to get dressed and leave! I'm soooo thankful she calmed me down and they took me back for surgery and I fell right asleep. :)

I had nights of fear before my RNY. I had so much trouble sleeping because I just didn't know the unknown. I am so glad that I did it for my health. I just had to make myself do it.

Thanks for the support! I just keep reminding myself of why I'm doing this. I agree that the fear of the unknown is the worst. I'm not really scared of the actual surgery...just life after.

It's completely normal to have post surgery fears. Just keep urself and ur mind busy it helps a lot. Also make a list of all the things u wanna do once u loose weight and anytime you face a challenge pull that list out and read it for a reminder of why ur doing this for urself. Best wishes!!!

Hello, I think that the more research you do,the less fearful you will become. Just remember that this is a gift you are giving yourself. And no one deserves it more than you

Yeah, I had the same feeling about 2 months before my surgery. I started freaking out and googling RNY Complications which made it even worse. I ended up getting over it after a few days though. I had never had any kind of major surgery before; I hadn't even ever been to the ER for anything in my life. So I was definitely scared of the unknown. However, my surgeon was amazing, the surgery itself went smoothly, and I'm fairly happy with the results.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
