Foods okay, Liquids not?

Recommended Posts

I had my second fill yesterday and at first I was overfilled and couldn't get the Water down so they took out 1cc. Today I still feel like water is hesitant to go down (kind of like I can feel it all the way down and it kind of stays in the back of my throat for a couple of seconds) but havn't had a problem with food as long as I chew well. Is this crazy? I know it will be a few days before I really know what is going on with things but has anyone had more difficulty with liquids than with foods?

When I got my 4th fill 2 weeks ago, the nurse said I should feel liquids hesitate a nano-second before going down. I'm not sure why you can feel the liquids hesitating more than solids, but I can. I am finally at my optimum spot. It feels wonderful!

Does it have anything to do with timing? If I drink before my pouch is empty, I sometimes feel like the Water just sits on top of food waiting to pass through, and it feels like the water is in my esophagus.

I think also has a lot to do with the temperature of the liquids you are trying to get down. I have herd from a LOT of people that drinking something cold can really be difficult on you. Warmth relaxes the tissues. Then it makes sense that if I get up first thing in the morning (when I am ususally tighter) and drink something COLD, it may feel like it doesn't want to go down....

Thanks! I will try to pay closer attention to timing and temperature. Now I just have to figure out if this is my sweet spot or not.

Fills can indeed be very tricky and each one of us reacts differently to a new fill.

You have the same sensation whether it's cold Water or warm tea or some Soup? Kacee is right, in the morning when we are ussually more restricted cold beverages don't go down well, but some tea or coffee don't seem to be a problem.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
