How long does the abdomen pain last after VSG?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the site and just had my surgery on Monday Jan 9th. I just got home the hospital and although the pain has been gradually getting better, it's still pretty bad. Bending over and sitting/standing are the worst. It might be a Lille worse than a normal VSG surgery because the surgeon found a surprise hernia once she got inside that needed fixing.

Thanks for any help!

I was off all pain meds within 4 days, I had my surgery Dec 30th. After that I was a little sore but not bad enough to justify the meds, my nurse said I could switch to Tylenol at that point for soreness but I didn't take it. At this point, I am not even sore unless I push on the incision spots

This is going to vary so much. I never had any pain after the day of surgery and haven't had any meds for pain since, and I also had a hernia repair. I did find my abdomen to be slightly tender when attempting to bend over for a few days, but I'm 6 days post op now and feel fantastic.

I was sleeved yesterday too with hernia repair. I walked like crazy in the hospital which helped. I don't like the way the narcotic pain medicine tastes or makes me feel so I've been using extra strength tylonel gel caps and the pain isn't bad unless I have a gas bubble and even then once it passes I'm fine.

I was off pain meds during the day after I left the hospital. I still took the meds to sleep. The pain gets better, but the incision soreness can last awhile. My big incisions still gets sore if I bend too much, and I'm a month out. It's more annoying than it is painful haha

That depend on your body (healing mechanism) also your Doctor and team, and you. I did ask my Doctor what was I to expect concerning pain level and length. I was having two different surgeries two weeks apart(foot and sleeve.) I was told the worst would be the first 24 hours then it would taper off. I was blessed I had absolutely no pain from my sleeve or my foot on the onset. So much so I questioned if he actually did the sleeve.

I've actually heard of Dr. not doing it and people finding out years later it was never done.

I wanted to be one of those people who didn't need much pain medicine after surgery but that wasn't the case for me. I had a drain and a lot of the pain was from that. They took the drain out after 7 days and it was a couple of days after that before I was able to stop the pain meds completely. I was so discouraged by everyone posting that they didn't need the pain meds, but I had to realize that we are not all the same and our surgery experiences won't be the same. It's ok to take the pain meds if you need them.

I was sleeved 10/24/16 and I took off work for 2 weeks. And during that time I took my pain meds the whole time. But I did need less as the days passed. When I went back to work after the two weeks I didn't take any more pain meds and just used Tylenol. But I do have to say my abdominal pain from surgery did hurt pretty bad. And I was up walking around and taking care of my kids when I got home. I'm a nurse so I know the importance of getting active and walking after surgery.

I never took any pain meds after I left the hospital; However, the deep incision caused me pain with activity (exercise) for 9 weeks. At 9 weeks, that stitch popped and I had immediate relief. I can now exercise with much greater intensity with no pain. After surgery, I wore my stomach binder any time I walked for the first 2 weeks. It provided great relief.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
