Protein Shakes Post-Op

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am two weeks post-op now and I can hardly eat.

Actually I am confused with the feeling of being full or it's my stomach that is hurting.

I'm thinking to take Protein shakes although my doctor didn't inform me about it.

If anyone consumed Protein Shakes post-op, then it would be great if you shared with me the following

- Is it powder or liquid?

- What's the brand?

- Is it safe?

- Can I take whey Protein concentrate or isolate?

Thanks for your help.

Do I understand correctly that your doctor didnt tell you to drink ptotein? Clear Protein isolate the first week then any low carb no sugar Protein drinks after that. What did your doctor tell you to eat/drink?

Yes, he told me so.

He guided me through the pureed food stage to try to eat some chicken, meat, eggs, cheese (mashed and minced) to get my protein intake.

But I can't consume these portions, so I'm curious about my protein intake.

You certainly should be drinking Protein shakes.... My Clinic had me on 3 premier shakes daily two weeks before my surgery and even up to now, however now, only 60 grams are required. Currently 4 wks post op. I have only been eating mushy food for 5 days. Be safe

Premier Protein shakes from costco are part of my daily routine. They taste delicious, are 11 ounces counting towards your daily liquids, and have 30 grams of Protein. I have one every morning about an hour after Breakfast.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
