Pre Op Diet *Not losing weight*

Recommended Posts

Hello! My surgery is January 18th. My surgeon only requires a 1 week preop diet to shrink the liver. I wanted to be sure I did my part in helping to decrease complications and allow my self room for error and started a week early (Now I regret it! LOL). I am now on day 7. This diet is hard! However, not impossible. My real issue is that I've only lost like 3 pounds on this diet. In fact, one day my weight went up 1/2 a pound. I'm concerned that my liver may not be shrinking because I'm not losing a lot of weight. I have not cheated and actually thought I was doing great.

Has anyone else not lost a significant amount of weight on the preop diet? I would have expected to be down at least 5 pounds by now. I'm also concerned with how it will be post op. If I'm not really losing weight on the preop liquid diet, will I even lose weight with my sleeve? I'm well aware that the sleeve is just a tool and I need to work my tool but I'm doing my part now and not seeing results. So many mixed emotions and concern.

I had a two week pre op diet, I could still eat food on it, just smaller meals from a list my doctor gave me, I only lost 5 lbs on it and I was 407lbs day of surgery, now I'm 315lbs, four months out. Even if you don't loose a lot of weight from the pre op diet your liver should still shrink enough for surgery to be successful. Good luck!!!

Side note; I had already lost about 30 lbs while I was waiting the 6 months for surgery.

Although losing weight on the 2 week pre-op diet was nice for me, that is not what the goal of the pre-op diet is.

The goal is to shrink the liver.

So don't get discouraged that you aren't losing much weight. It really doesn't matter, and it certainly doesn't mean that you're not going to lose weight and do well after the sleeve surgery.

Thanks mylighthouse. I guess my concern is if I'm not losing the weight, is my liver shrinking?

Thanks for the encouragement for after the sleeve! I really needed to hear that!

Make sure you aren't drinking carbonated drinks (regular soda NOR diet soda). That will stall weight loss for sure.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
