Hi guys, I'm feeling extremely guilty. I started my pre op liver shrinking diet on Dec 26th. My surgery is scheduled for Jan 16th. I have lost the recommended weight that my surgeon wanted me to within the first 2 weeks. So I cheated this past weekend. And I feel awful about it. :( Just needed somewhere to vent to. When I talk to my husband about it. He tells me thst it'd ok. Just get back on the wagon. :/

I'm still pre-op, but I have a family member who went through the gastric sleeve. She had a hard time staying on the pre-op diet but still did ok with the surgery. It will be fine. Just dust yourself off and leave the guilt behind. Best wishes on your surgery next week!

Thank you. I keep trying to tell myself that. Unfortunately I can be very negative. I'm working on that too.

The things that sucks about "cheating" on the pre-op diet is that you likely kicked your body out of ketosis if you had carbs. Which means you will have to go through all the headaches and fatigue associated with entering ketosis all over again.

I star liquids on the 17 of Jan. I know it will be the hardest part of the journey since I still have a normal size stomach. I will try to go to sleep early to ignore hunger pangs.

Don't let one cheat, cheat you out of the rest of the time you have left just dust yourself off and get back to it. You seem to be doing great!

I had seven kinds of hell on the pre-op diet, and my surgeon wasn't even very strict with it. Mine was 2-3 Protein shakes a day, with a list of fruit and other healthy Snacks allowed, and a balanced meal. Basically a Slimfast diet with better shakes. But it was SO hard to keep even to that. I worried that I wouldn't be able to follow through with diet changes after because it was so hard. But after surgery, my cravings and intense hunger just really went away. So don't think that you can't do this just because you struggled with the pre-op diet.

Now, I will caution you, once you've had the surgery, please please please stick 100% to the diet instructions your surgeon gives. The diet progression post-op is not only to lose weight, but more importantly to protect your healing stomach and let the new sleeve structure figure out how to deal with foods by starting on liquids and then gradually moving to firmer and firmer foods. (See my rant about it in my signature - I'm not a doctor but...) Once your surgeon clears you to a full diet, it's no longer a safety issue and is a success issue, but those first couple of months post-op are crucial. We get a LOT of people on here who eat all sorts of things they shouldn't very early on, and it can be very dangerous.

Good luck!

This is the ONLY reason I haven't cheated lol

Thank you for the replies. It hasn't been to hard up to this point. When I'm working it is easier because I don't eat at work, so drinking the shakes were easy. And when I'm at home I am sleeping. I work nights so it's the transitioning back to days when I'm off that messes me up. I just get hunger pains. Or some kind of pain. 5 more days left till my surgery. I'm praying I make it till then. The last thing I want to do is gain any weight.

you know i am waiting for my surgery date and I have yet to start my preop diet.....i know it will be a battle but it will be the battle that I have chosen not one that was chosen for me. I will win and in the end is me, my strength, my health, and happiness that only I can achieve. I am so happy for you and this journey of better health. I am glad there are those on this journey with me.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
