Hi everyone! I'm struggling a ton with head hunger. I'm almost four weeks post op, and still staying within my prescribed food list, but I find myself constantly thinking about food. Is it normal for DSers to be hungry this early post op, or is it head hunger? If it's head hunger, what do you guys do to combat it?

I would bet it is absolutely head hunger. It makes it worse if you are watching tv commercials for the food channel.

You will have to work at distracting yourself, unfortunately head hunger is the thing that I fight most even now 28 months later.

I knit, crochet, read, play on my ipad, take a shower, do the dishes.....anything to take my mind off it and it usually works.

One condition many patients experience is a strong desire to chew food after surgery. Since most times after surgery you are restricted to full liquid or puree, it doesn't meet the requirement to chew. As you chew, your body releases digestive fluids that help with breaking down food. So it is a natural process.

I have the most difficulty when I forget my Prilosec. The acid makes me "feel" hungry. I come to the app, read something stupid someone ate, then I'm fine.

I had no idea that I could have to do with the acid. I really need to get better about taking my Prilosec. I feel like that would definitely help.

If you had the full DS, then eat. Not sure what your presecribed food list entails, but I would be eating Protein. Add more to meals, or Snacks (if it's protein).

Part of the reason many of us have the DS is so we can eat very frequently. I eat every hour or two.

Hi. I had the one loop DS in December 2013. My suggestion is also place yourself in therapy. This definitely helped me with head hunger and realized what triggered my stuff. Now I'm completely opposite when it comes to food. I eat bc i no i need to inorder to survive otherwise I really don't like food anymore. My goal is to maintain my weight. Not loose anymore. I learned that when I stopped overeating I had to replace it with something else so I make sure I exercise a couple of times a week. Even if i can't get to the gym i make sure I walk.

My eating is 95%Protein on a daily basis. I have cut out sugar, Pasta, rice, bread, sweet potatoes, potatoes, corn, peas and anything high in carbs. I rarely eat fruit not bc it's bad but my taste buds changed drastically. We use the crock pot alot. Chili with no Beans, sausage, peppers and onions, ribs, skirt steak with the cream of mushroom Soup with the lowest carb count. The ribs and peppers and onions are placed in the crock pot with a cup of veg broth on low for 8 hours. I keep everything on low for eight hours. Even though I am three years out i like my food tender. I don't like chicken and turkey anymore bc my stomach don't like it bc it is not tender enough. I am still in therapy and focused on dbtselfhelp.com. This helped me tremendously.

I've been practicing DBT since 1999. It changed my life. As a matter of fact, I just began Skills classes again this past December. I find I need to refresh them every 5 years to keep myself sharp. :)

As long as it is helping you ,this is all that matters.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
