I just completed my EGD Friday and it was a truly awful experience. They gave me anesthesia and I had such a hard time breathing that they ended up having to stop the procedure to intubate me because I stopped breathing. The anesthesia wore off before the EGD was done and while they were pumping oxygen into me. So naturally I freaked out screaming.. anyone else have any issues like this? I'm worried if I had this difficult of a time for a simple procedure that I won't make it through the actual bypass!

I'm sorry that happened to you. Have you been tested for sleep apnea?

they don't put you all the way under with an EGD - but they knock you out cold when you're having surgery. So no worries. I did wake up once during at EGD, but they put me right back under.

P.S. they use that drug that causes "twilight sleep" when they do EGD's since you're under for such a short time

They usually use Versed so you don't remember anything. However I work in the ER and we often due them with no sedation.

I'm bipolar and take alot of meds and I've woke up three times when I had to have EGD for another reason, just ask to speak to the anesthesiologist before surgery and explain the problem to them , I just completed my EGD test for my wls and I didn't wake up at all the anesthesiologist makes all the difference.

It wasn't really the waking up part that worried me. I mean clearly I don't like that I did but just that I had such trouble breathing. I'm wondering if it will be the same when I have the bypass..

Thanks for all your replies

no - they knock you completely out and you'll have a breathing tube. So it'll be very different.

It's an endoscopic examination of the esophagus stomach and a portion of the duodenum It's basically a tube they put down your throats that has a light and camera at the end - some surgeons require it as a pre op testing. Looking for different things.. hernias, ulcers etc

I have sleep apnea and asthma. I have had scary breathing problems with past medical procedures so when it came time for my EGD and VSG I told the anesthesiologist ahead of time. They intabated me for the EGD from the get go and no problems. Same with the surgery. No problems. If you do need a CPAP, then by all means , use it. They are a bitch at firs5, but then they make a world of difference!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
