Extend post op liquid diet

Recommended Posts

Did anyone extend their 2 week liquid post op diet, regardless if cleared for next stage. I'm thinking of doing another week or 2. I personally was able to eat 2 weeks before surgery, so I wasn't required to do liquids for those who were.

I didn't extend it, but my practice's normal rules are 4 weeks of post op liquids, so that is what I did. It didn't hurt me in the slightest and I think I struggled with introducing food a lot less than people who advance their diets faster. I never had any problems with food, and I think taking things slow helped.

Yes I did because I was not tolerating the next stage very well!! So doc told me to go back to the prior stage for another week and then try again! That worked for me!

Why do you want to delay? If you are tolerating the current stage, then I would keep moving forward. You will get better nutrition and will move towards dense Proteins which will help you feel restriction and will keep you full longer.

If you want to stay on liquids because you think you will lose more weight, I don't recommend it. Your body isn't the same as before surgery. It is healing and adjusting and the weight will come off if you stick to your plan and give it the nourishment it needs to heal.

Yes, but I want to take advantage of the first few months esp. The 1st month.

You can do what you want to do but you may not get the results you want. I didn't have a liquid pre op dit either. That did not hinder me losing after the sleeve. Mostly what I am trying to say is your body needs really good nutrition now, much more so than pre surgery. Best way to get that is thru dense Protein which will also make you feel better. Hope everything goes well for you.

Thank you everyone. I had my first post op appt. Yesterday and lost 12lbs. A little disappointed but as long as the scale goes in the right direction, I can live with that. So I'll move on to the next phase.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
