RA/fibromyalgia and consdering gastric sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone!

I started my journey to get the gastric sleeve. I have to do 4 months of classes. My questions is I have RA and fibro and scared of the possible complications due to my conditions has anyone had any complications and not able to take meds? I'm on a fb support group and get freaked out. I was sure this is what I wanted until I started reading some of the complains. Horrible acid reflux, nausea, vomiting, losing teeth and so on. So I'm a bit freaked out at the moment. Lol, any info from anyone with a autoimmune disease will be helpful. Thanks everyone!

Hello, I also have RA and Fibro... I was sleeved on Dec 19th, 2016. As far as complications. The only thing I've really been dealing with is the vomiting and that I'm guessing is just from learning the amount that I can take I'm not even close to a fourth of a cup of intake... It's quite a bit less than that and I have to wait about 5-10 minutes before I can have anything else intake wise. Heartburn / acid reflux is a major problem, I take Prilosec now but it only helps for about half of the day, I don't know if I should be taking 2 a today... so I'm just going to switch up and try different over-the-counter Med. I'm not too terribly concerned about it because I'm sure it is just being able to find the right combination of meds it's going to work for me. As far as my fibro pain or anything of that nature, I haven't really been experiencing any pain since I have been at home recovering, if nothing else I feel that this is going to be better because of the weights Los will be easier on my bones and muscles. Best of luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
