Had my surgery yesterday 9/19

Recommended Posts

Well yesterday I had my lapband surgery at 8:15am. Right after the surgery while I was in recovery I had quite a bit of pain. I was given Dilaudid and then a while later Lortab. I had pain mostly on my left side (my port is on my right). I went home at 11:30am. I had minimal pain until about 8pm. And then even with my walking I had lots of pain in my port area. Then at midnight the gas pain came on both shoulders! :cry I only have one heating pad so I had to alernate every half hour or so last night which caused me not to get much sleep. I just hope that the gas will go away quickly. Today I still have the bilateral shoulder and neck pain along with my port incision area. The shoulder pain feels like someone is stabbing me with a knife. I am taking my lortab and walking. The night time was the worst. The hiccups today are painful along with burping. I still feel like I have a sore throat from the intubation. Popsicles are a godsend. I got the sugar free fudge popsicles with only 40 calories each. So I sipped all day and only managed to drink 32 oz of Water, but I also had 8 oz of broth, and a Protein shake 11 oz which is mostly Water.

Thanks for all of your support. :)

Gas X for the win!!! LOL That stuff helped a lot during the first two days after surgery!

Glad to see you're doing good! Just keep walking, and the pains will subside! :)

Hi Chilipepper - I had my surgery 9-17-07. The gas gets much better, I promise. I had it up the left side of the neck bad, with a Migraine headache. But today I'm able to sleep w/o drugs and no migraine/very little gas pain. I'm ready for regular liquids tomorrow. Can't wait!! Been having Apple juice, Boost (lite), chicken broth, Water and Crystal lite. You'll feel so much better in a day or two!

By day 4 you will feel like a new person! I promise. I went out all say shopping. Walk as much as you can to help break up the gas. The CO2 has to move to areas of low concentration in your body, so the more you move the more your muscles will need it and use it up! Good Luck! Hang in their and congrats!

I was banded 9/19, too. Lortab gives me insomnia, so I was climbing the walls last night. Got permission to take some Benidryl today--'cause that knocks me out.

Have used my Gas-X and have had about 2 cups of brothy Soup, a couple of Medifast shakes and lots of Water since 3am--

I'm very tired and some places hurt--but I'm still glad I did it.

Congrats to all the bandsters of 9/19!

I took the tylenol w/codeine the first night and that was it. I sleep pretty good now...just wish I could turn on my tummy! That's my favorite position to sleep in!

I hopy your surgery goes well - expect gas pain up your shoulder and neck, expect the chest cuts to be sensitive and you will want to burb, but can't. Figure out the best place and way to lay with your port supported. Don't be nervous! It moves quickly and easily, and you are on your way to being a new you!

For me the most painful has been the wanting to burp but can't. I had some gas discomfort but that went away. For now my incisions hurt and my port area feels really sore. I hope this goes away soon. It breaks my heart that I can't carry my 2 year old son. We tell him mommy has boo boos on her tummy and he has been respectful. He forgets and wants my arms. Ahhh

darragha - my two year old wants me to love on him. He is always lifting up my shirt, and says "Owwweeee" and does a shhhhh after it. He checks on it all day long but reminds him that he has to be easy with me. He has kicked me twice today - our first day alone after surgery - in my stomach playing while changing his diaper. It is something to work with for sure! Good luck to you and your toddler. Are you a stay at home mommy too?

Poohlvr, my baby is 15.5! She has a job and a horse and is still making good grades in school.

I've never had the luxury of being a stay at home mom. Even though I have a career as a romance novelist (which I do from home), I work outside the home, too. Those insurance benefits are just too good to give up :peep:

I LOVE being with my family and have a great relationship with my daughter (even though she's a teenager!). My mother "misses" the baby...but I am so enjoying the young woman ;) There is nothing better than being a mother. Just my .02!

Yes, I am a stay at home mom. I have the same problem with the kicking during diaper changes. He goes to preschool Tues. & Wed from 9-12, so I have a little break. My husband has been taking him. I feel much better today, day 5. I am so glad I got this done. I did question my surgery while I was in pain the first few days. Thus far, I've lost 4.5 lbs and didn't gain any during surgery. I hope you are feeling well. How are you faring?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
