shanirish33 20 Posted January 8, 2017 No one seems to talk about the pain. It hurts to even breath. I know i just had major surgery but not even the meds in the hospital brought my pain level down. Morphine was a joke and did nothing. They ended up giving me deladid every 2 hrs and lortab every 4 and still was in extreme pain. So then i got released last night and am at home trying to manage on Percocet every 6 hrs. Is this amount of pain normal? It wraps all the way around to my back and i cant take a full breath. Please someone tell me it gets better soon idk if i can take too many more days like today
mylighthouse 782 Posted January 8, 2017 Sorry that you are in so much pain. I was in a lot of pain with my surgery too, and it did radiate to my back like yours. My worst days for pain were on day 3 and day 4, although I continued to deal with pain to a lesser degree in my 2nd and 3rd week after surgery. I was one of the lucky ones who didn't really have to deal with gas pain. My pain was at the incision sites and also on the inside. I had one incision that had a lot of bruising around it and that really hurt bad, but I have a big hernia right under it too, so that was part of the pain. I remember thinking that I wished I hadn't had the surgery, I was hurting so bad on the 4th day. BUT.... that was the only time I thought that. The next day, the pain was nowhere near as bad. And as I started to lose weight, I never have regretted having the surgery. The pain won't last forever. Some people have more pain than others. You will make it through and it will get better. The pain will lessen. Hang in there!
Jessibird 32 Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) I had a brief thought about why did I do this to myself. I am 15 days post op and feeling alive again for several days now. It will get better fast. Just my left side that still hurts now. Sent from my SM-J700T using the BariatricPal App Edited January 8, 2017 by Jessibird
bitingcat 87 Posted January 8, 2017 Did you also have a hiatal hernia repair? I did, and the upper chest and shoulder pain were killer. They could barely ask about my incisions because I was so busy bitching about the gas pain in my chest and shoulders. They ended up giving me Valium for the chest pain and Dilaudid for the incisions - I think the Valium was supposed to relax my chest muscles. It did seem to help, but yeah - breathing really hurt for a few days. A heat pack on my back helped me relax a little too, and I spread a little arnica gel around my incisions (no where near the stitches) to help with bruising. Be sure to keep in touch with your doctor, though. Hopefully you'll start to feel better soon. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
dominyks_mom 54 Posted January 8, 2017 I hope you get better with your pain soon. If it doesn't I would call your surgeon and see if you can get something different to help. I was hooked up to fentonal in the hospital even though I didn't use any pain meds at all while in the hospital or after I got out. Granted I have a very high pain tolerance. I would imagine it will get better soon. Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App
shanirish33 20 Posted January 8, 2017 Thank you all its hard to know whats supposed to be normal and i felt like this is never going away. Now i know ill get through it!
areadyloser 31 Posted January 8, 2017 You will get through this and be thankful in a few days. Have you tried the gasX dissolve strips? Could be a combination of gas pain and sore from surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
shanirish33 20 Posted January 12, 2017 Found out the lower part of my left lung closed up from the surgery. The nurse was surprised they didnt teach me to cough holding a pillow and use the spirometer at the hospital. Still have sharp pain everytime i breath in deep hopefully it gets better
nnagle323 12 Posted January 12, 2017 Omg!! Hope you feel better asap! Make sure you do those spirometer treatments as much as possible so you don't get pneumonia and walking is the best thing ever to help with the pain. AnaDmom3 66 Posted January 12, 2017 Definitely sounded like there was an issue. Glad they figured it out and hope you start feeling better. Everybody is different so probably why so many posts on pain levels. I literally had zero pain from surgery recovery to today and just about 4 weeks post.
