Feeling Discouraged - Slow Weight Loss

Recommended Posts

Went through Gastric Bypass on 11/14/16 and feel like my weekly weight loss is too slow. I guess my expectations may be unrealistic, but it's just discouraging to see some early success and then have it slow down and I'm not even 8 weeks post-op. I know the weight loss may look more like stair steps on a chart, but I seem to be metabolically resistant and I'm not sure what to do. To give you an idea, I am sharing my weekly weight loss chart below. Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips for revving things up? I am a guy so I was hoping I would lose weight faster than the average numbers.

Day of Surgery weight: 334 (I weigh on Mondays)

Week 1: 323 - Weight lost: 11 pounds

Week 2: 318.8 - Weight lost: 4.2 pounds

Week 3: 317 - Weight lost: 1.8 pounds

Week 4: 310.4 - Weight lost: 6.6 pounds

Week 5: 306.4 - Weight lost: 4 pounds

Week 6: 304.6 - Weight lost: 1.8 pounds

Week 7: 301 - Weight lost: 3.6 pounds

Right now: 299.8 - Weight lost this week: 1.2 pounds

Don't mean to whine...I am just anxious and not sure if this is normal or not. It just feels like so many others that go through this surgery are losing weight so much faster and I'm drinking my Water, getting my Protein in from healthy sources, and walking almost every day for over an hour. Ugh.

35 lbs in less than 2 months seems Awesome to me. Could you have lost 35 lbs in such a short time before vsg?? Your body has been through a major change and it is still figuring out what is going on. Also, you seem lucky and don't really look like you had much of a stall. Many people have 2 or 3 weeks of no loss, so good work.

Keep doing what your doing and just like you hit the under 300, before you know it you can get in the 100's

That is great in such a short time. Don't try to rush the process. Don't get discouraged at all. There will be times where things will slow down, but it will pick back up! Good luck to you

Please watch dr. Matthew Weiner's video on YouTube on weight loss rates. It will help you. You are losing and you are doing great! And sounds like you will do well in the long run. It is more important where you end up than how long it takes to get there.

You are doing great! Keep up the good work! I know it's boring to hear that it's a marathon, not a sprint, but it's so true.

I also struggle with my head. I had rny a week after you and I have lost 17 lbs. I am lighter than you to start with, but I still want it to go faster. I can't see any difference in my body or face, but my clothes fit looser.

My surgeon is happy and I rely on the rumour that my skin will not sag as much if I lose slower...

A lady who had surgery the same day as me had a fun comment when I saw her in the isle walking after surgery. She said that it's ridiculous, but she kind of expected to wake up skinny and all the extra jiggle was still there! What a bummer!!

THIS! my primary care doctor averaged my loss as more than 3 pounds a week when I said virtually the same thing as the OP. He said "how else can you expect continued loss!

I felt and still at times feel Im a slower loser.. but I must say that all in all that isnt really so. Whn I look at the total and see Im still losing. I think sometimes we have unrealistic ideas of what we should lose. I gained 23 pounds from day of surgery to my go home weight after surgery It took me almost a month to hit 1 pound of loss from that. But I have lost 68 more pounds since then and I had been dieting for 4 months prior which I now understand also effects my speed of weight loss. Realistically I have lost 70 pounds at 5 months from surgery and 45 prior to surgery and I am healthier and 115 pounds lighter so I am happy. I will lose more..and so will you. You are doing fine. Get your fluids in and get your Protein in ( i need someone to tell me that) Get in 60 minutes of activity.. its happening.. be happy We didnt get here in a month or 3...

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
