Help! Does anyone have excessive burping?

Recommended Posts

I'm one month post op and I'm burping all the time which becomes annoying though out the day, sometimes I even wake up at the middle of the night to burp. If anyone has any knowledge about it please help.

I agree with Dub....I am a little over 4 months post-op and rarely burp. Maybe you can take Gaviscon to help? Sorry I can't give more insight.

I remember making a post like this after surgery...I was Burpy McBurpin and I distinctly remember that it lasted for at least 2 years, because I remember accidentally burping when we were eating when I had moved into a new condo. It was SO freaking annoying because when you eat alone, you tend to just burp (at least I did), so when you're around people and you're regularly burping, sometimes you forget and yeah, not exactly Ms. or Mr. Manners. I am now about 40 months post-op, and while I don't know when the burping stopped, I know that I learned how to "burp on the inside", which is probably why I don't notice it anymore. Lol, burping with your mouth shut accomplishes the same objective without seeming like no one taught you table manners and once you're consciously aware of doing it everytime, you don't tend to notice it much anymore. As I'm writing this, I realize I actually just burped on the inside, but I don't think that burping at this point is an issue for me. It's worst the first few months, and it lasted for me, but not to my knowledge most other people, for at least 2 years, but it was most excessively annoying right after surgery.

I'm 4.5 months out and burp like crazy. I'm also having some other issues that may be contributing to it though

I burp all the time and I'm a good 2 months out. u.u It happens if you eat to fast, but for me, it's probably because I try to be active for 10-15 min [walking around a bunch] after I eat to make everything settle a bit better. I think it has to do with how small your stomach is. You're full, but a lot of that is air, right. So you walk around a bit, and it all compresses and pushes the air out -- voila, burp!!!!

I had it a lot at first, and still burp quite a bit but it's not as often as right out of the gate. I theorize that it has a lot to do with the new structure of the sleeve. Used to be our stomachs were huge bags, so once food/liquid was past the opening at the top, it had all this room to go. Now it's like a cylinder, and if you've worked with pouring liquid into tubes like cylinder beakers in a lab, you know that it tends to trap air bubbles (well, thick liquid anyway) more than a flask beaker. I figure that our sleeves do kinda the same thing.

6 weeks out and I burp quite often, esp during and after eating and drinking. They are much smaller burps than what I used to do...kind of little lady burps. I won't be winning any burping contests.

I had a lot of gas and burping and my nutritionist told me to get something for it. I found these Gas x strips. You just put them on your tongue and they melt. They work great!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
