Surgery and Menopause

Recommended Posts

Is this normal? I am 48 years young and haven't had my monthly menstrual since April 2013. My surgery (sleeve and Hiatal Hernia repair) date was 12/27 at 240lbs.

I am 10 days post op, down to 225lbs. I woke up this morning to my menstrual cycle after almost 4 years.

Has this happened to anyone else or could it be something else?

@@sweetzcp It happened to me! I was about 10 months into menopause and had my surgery (I was 51)...I had 4 full menstrual cycles post-op, then they stopped again. My PCM wasn't concerned about it, as there's so much estrogen stored in our fat and that estrogen being mobilized is probably what caused the bleeding.

Ok thanks. True Menopause begins after 1 full year absence of your menstrual cycle. So technically you were in a pre menopausal state.

My hormones are completely out of wack! I am having crazy hot flashes and complaining about burning up when everyone else is freezing. Before surgery I was always cold. I'm only 1 week out and only 37, but my body is ON FIRE!!! The dr said hormone changes are completely normal after surgery. He told me to wait 3 months to go to my GYN and ENDO so things can level out more!!

I was banded in 2010. 8 days ago I got my band removed and had a sleeve. Since the band didn't remove any anatomy, it didn't change my hormones, PCOS actually improved! After sleeve, it's hot flash city!!! I lost 100 originally, but gained from complications....almost back to 100 down!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
