Needing Advice

Recommended Posts

I haven't gotten the surgery yet but I'm trying to lose as much as I can before then. I'm having a lot of trouble with snacking and fluctuating weight. I'm getting worried that even after surgery it will still be hard to lose anything.

Well that is exactly what this time is for. This is the time when you have to learn how to eat, and take control of your diet and your life.

What procedure are you considering?

You will DEFINITELY lose weight with bypass and sleeve because those will permanently decrease the size of your stomach.

The lap band is dependent on you getting the fills done when you need to.

Now, with each of the procedures there is a post surgery diet that needs to be followed. No drinking while eating, also.

One way you might be able to curb snacking is to eat on a schedule. Allow times for Snacks, but stick to a schedule with them. This is what you will have to do post-op anyway. Immediately post-op, you won't have normal "full" or "hungry" signals. You likely won't even WANT to eat a lot of the time. But you will need to eat on a schedule to make sure you are getting all your Protein in. So go ahead and try to get into that habit now. Another good idea would be to focus on high protein snacks. Never eat "carb-only" snacks.

Start practicing! When I made my decision, I put myself on a 1200 cal limit and reduced it gradually to 800 cal the month before surgery. It was a great learning curve for me!

If you still have a snacking problem when you get wls, you might seriously injure yourself if you continue the behavior right out of surgery. It is also possible to eat around the wls and then you have had a big surgery for nothing. You might consider seeing a therapist before surgery. That will increase your chances of a safe wls and the result you wish for.

I used an app to see how to adjust my diet towards my post-op diet and life. Myfitnesspal works well for this purpose. Hi Protein and low carb with non-calorie fluids. And quit smoking now if you are a smoker.

Do your research. Watch youtube videos of both good and bad outcomes, talk to people and go to classes. You need to have a knowledge of complications so you can communicate well with your team if something should occour.

Good luck to you!

Nilla

Yeah I've been getting in about 70g Protein each day and about 60oz Water. I've completely cut out soda and tea. Now I'm trying to get in the habit of grabbing cheese cubes or carrots, things along those lines, instead of chips or candy.

Carrots won't be a good post-op snack, but cheese cubes are good. Try for Protein Snacks like cheese sticks, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, Jerky, nuts, and beef/turkey sticks. If you do Protein shakes or bars for Snacks, be sure to read the labels and make sure they aren't loaded with sugar or carbs.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
