I had a tiny bit at twelve weeks, but I was out and my food choices were extremely limited. I was able to eat about two tablespoons with some chicken. I try to stay away from rice and Pasta because it doesn't fit into my food plan.

My surgeon actually put bread/rice/pasta on the "banned forever" list of foods. So I'm not suppose to eat it. Reality for me though is that I waited almost 18 months before I tried to eat rice. And till this day it still can fuck with me if I over do it. At most I can do a 1/2 of a 1/2 cup of rice. So maybe 1/4 cup. But again if I consume it too quickly its coming right back up. A lot of times the puking make it not worth it to me.

Quinoa was an ok substitute for rice and it's rich in Protein which you will need post-surgery. But for me it's still didn't have the right consistency too actually 100% replace rice for me. So I guess that's why I never really fully embraced it as a rice replacement if you will. But there have been others on here that had made the transition from rice to quinoa and haven't looked back.

The only "banned" item I can consume now with little to no issues at all is bread. And even then I limit the hell out of it as to not over do it. I seem to tolerate toasted bread better than soft chewy breads.

I got a bowl from quedoba with brown rice. Thought it might be ok but I took a couple bites and paid dearly for it. Won't be doing it again. Only real carb I can eat with no issues is crackers.

All programs vary, you should get in touch with yours for their guidelines.

That said, I was allowed to try rice and other grains after I had reached my goal weight and successfully maintained for a few months.

For most people, during weight loss, the idea is to focus on Protein and nutrition. Rice doesn't provide much of either. Why do you want to eat rice? This is a time to break old habits with respect to food. Is rice a habit in the past that you miss? Is it a comfort food? Do you just like it? These might be reasons to eat a food in the past, but this is a great time to develop new tastes for healthier foods and new reasons to pick the foods you eat.

The only rice I've had in the 2+ years since my surgery has just been the little bit that stuck to the Protein in dishes I've eaten that came with rice. Think I might have ingested a bit that was stuck to my refried Beans or some chicken or something at a restaurant or party....

I believe I was allowed rice around 3 months post-op by my nutrition plan and I probably could have physically handled it much sooner than that. But it is a complete and utter waste of space. Like Pasta, I just never bother wasting space on it when I could be having Protein instead!

@@ozzy91 So, you 'can' have rice as soon as your surgeon clears you for all foods. I think the bigger question is 'should' you have rice. That's the one you need to consider.

Well i havent had the surgery yet...i am due next week .. Its just that i havent told anyone about the surgery and i am not planning to either.

I am from India and we consume rice on a daily basis...Even thought i will be cutting out carbs completely from my diet... I just wanted to know if i sit in a gathering will i be able to gulp down a spoonful or 2 just for the sake of it...

Its funny that you say that. I've had tiny bits of rice here and there because it was habitual and i kept thinking of things in "diet" terms. But now that the fog of the holidays is lifted i am feeling much the same as you. Yesterday I had a tbsp of homemade Jamaican rice and peas and some type of stewed meat (i'm gonna say chicken) on my plate. I hadn't really had much carbs for the day. Maybe 20 of my 25? I had the rice in my plate but was picking the peas out to eat. I think i ate a tsp or more of the rice. I really didn't want to waste space in something that was going to take up space but wouldn't satiate as long as the protein. I think im slowly rewiring my brain ????

I just remembered that I've had sushi with quinoa and brown rice from my local grocery store two or three times post-op! So I lied in my earlier post! But still, I definitely don't eat rice with any sort of regularity.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
