Water causing stomach pain

Recommended Posts

Before surgery I used to chug Water. Big Water drinker. But now post-surgery, I can drink anything under the sun with no problems. But with water, taking small sips, regardless of the water temp (I'm not a big ice water person, so it's usually room temp), and regardless of whether I had any food earlier or not, I tend to get stomach pain. It's pretty annoying, because drinking water is the one thing I've always been good at. Now I'm sometimes reluctant to drink it because of the stomachache.

Anyone have any words or wisdom or experience? I am about three weeks out, btw. Hopefully, and presumably, this will pass.

It's frustrating how we all can have such drastically different experiences with this surgery in, for example, what we can or can't eat and tolerate. Makes it difficult to get a straight answer sometimes, you know what I mean? One person says one thing, then someone else comes along and says the opposite. But, that's a totally different topic.

Try drinking it warm or even hot. When I drink cold or, often, room temp Water, it hurts in my chest -- the esophagus, really. I don't recall anyone else feeling it in the stomach, but all things are possible.

My stomach tightens up and feels like it is cramping.

I have a lapband. What I experience with too-cold likwids is pretty common. It must be different with sleeve. It's just that I don't recall anyone having mentioned stomach, but you both have honest faces.

It will get better. I struggled and could only get it in if it was warm or hot (room temp didn't cut it) now I drink 2.5 litres a day and temp is a non issue.

I had the same pain from drinking Water for the first 10 months or so, then I realized one day it was just gone and I never noticed it leaving. It's just part of the healing process. :)

Someone posted that they were having problems with water and they switched to smart water, I haven't had my surgery yet so I don't know the difference but they said it was the only way they could drink water, I've seen smart water but don't know how smart it is lol, but thought it might help you.

I'm now almost 5 months out. For the first two months, I had a real hard time with plain Water. It had to have flavor. I drank lots of Vitamin Water Zero and water with Crystal Light or 4C Light packets in it. Could not drink plain water - unless it was almost lukewarm. Before surgery I would drink almost a gallon a day. Now. I can drink - even chug - water again, but I'm cautious because it can sometimes upset my tummy. Keep trying different temperatures and try adding flavor - it might help. Good luck.

I sometimes have an issue with it. Starting in my esophagus and then a mild cramping. I usually then belch for a bit afterward. I assumed it was gas pressure build up.

I have heard quite a few people say that Smart Water works for them. I think theysaid it was super filtered.

Maybe you are just taking too big of a sip?

I feel your pain! . I am a former Water chugged and also went through a period post-surgery where it cause terrible pain. But it's all better now.

Sticking to cool but not ice-cold water and adding a few drops of lemon juice seemed to help. Also, for some reason, SmartWater (a brand of bottled water) didn't bother me as much as regular tap or filtered water. I also found that drinking with a straw (at the suggestion of my surgery program) helped quite a bit -- I actually swallowed less air that way.

So hang in there. Your beloved water will become a joy to drink again in a few months.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
