Question about Drains & Foley's

Recommended Posts

I'm apparently getting one of each in & from my experience working in a hospital, my patients never like either & appear to be in so much pain when we take them out.

Can someone tell me what the pain is like? All I'm finding online is that the drain just feels weird. Doesn't really hurt. But Catheters/Foleys, I'm not really finding anything.

Only 2 times I had a Foley you still try to hold your pee at first but eventually your body just make you release it...once you realize that you won't pee on yourself it's ok....when it comes out ...my best description is its like a little suction thing coming out it didn't hurt though

progress starts in the mind

It did feel super long coming out

I asked my surgeon to not use a foley cath, he said no problem as long as I get out of bed to use the bathroom as soon as possible after surgery...I did without any trouble. The JP drain hurt for about 30 seconds while the nurse pulled it out, no pain afterwards.

I had a foley and I didn't even feel it really. They put it in when I was asleep, and took it out the morning after surgery when I was still groggy. It made me feel like I had to feel but it didn't hurt. It didn't hurt coming out either.

I had my drain removed today. Such a relief! It was pinch ( when he snipped the stitch), weird while he pulled it out, then pinch as it came out. Took 5 seconds maybe. The relief that's it's out however is the best!

I've had a few surgeries and I've experienced both but I kinda think the pain is more of a mindset, the Foley gets irritating and causes some discomfort , I also experienced the Foley wasn't working . I told the nurse I didn't think it was working because it felt like I had to pee. She wouldn't even consider that it might be clogged or kinked or in a bad position, when they took it out I definitely felt better after using a bed pan. I had a drain put in on my right side when they took out my gallbladder it just feels weird but I never had problems with it . I do think it's hard to move around when you have a drainage put in but didn't hurt going in or out.

I didn't have a catheter, but the drain coming out was bizarre. There was a pinch when she cut the stitch holding it in, and then while she was pulling (and pulling...and pulling...) it felt like the end of the drain was attached to one of my organs and that it was trying to come out through that itty bitty hole too! It wasn't as painful as it sounds, just a really, really weird feeling. The only real pain came because removing the drain seemed to dislodge a gas bubble from the surgery - went straight to my shoulder but I couldn't do anything about it right away because she still had to put a dressing on the drain wound before I could move around.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
