Pregnancy and High Blood Pressure

Recommended Posts

Hi All. My surgery was 10/13/15 because of chronic HBP and its been normal since then. Now however, I'm 14 weeks pregnant and just had a super high reading of 142/90. I could not eat much at all during my first trimester, specifically meat, milk eggs and yogurt, and so I fear I've been living like my pre-surgery days and eating way too many carbs and Christmas candy and Christmas Cookies. Like, an insane amount, and I'm wondering if maybe this has spiked my blood pressure. Go ahead, nail away!

No Condemnation here - just a bit of cautionary advice. Pregnancy comes with a host of changes, and one of them is a HUGE spike in your need for Protein intake.

You are not "eating for two", but you ARE nourishing for two! Increase your Protein intake a bit, and speak to your Nutritionist as soon as you can to develop a plan for your new dietary requirements. Make sure that all of your doctors are on the same page as your pregnancy progresses, and CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Well I wouldn't base anything off a single reading. I would suggest getting a bp home monitor and watch your levels for a few days, if they continue to be high, contact your OB. Of course poor eating choices can impact your blood pressure, so try to get back on track with your eating and see how that impacts your bp. At this point you need to focus on your baby and if your bp is high you need to work with your OB to monitor and correct if needed. Both you and the baby need you to be as healthy at this point as you can be, I have seen really bad complications in pregnancy due to high bp, please monitor it and don't take any risks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
