Hi Lauren,

You should ALWAYS be able to sip/drink fluids...if not, you're band is too tight and you need a slight unfill. When I get a fill, my doctor ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS makes lap-band patients about 4 ounces of Water after a fill (while the port needle is still connected) in order to make sure the band isn't too tight. If your doctor isn't doing this while you're in the office, you might want to suggest they begin doing so.

Good luck to you.

thank you to all who told me that i needed to have my band de-filled a bit after having not being able to even get Water down. my doctor, who did have me drink water before i left his office, believes that i may have been dehydrated from having spent the day on the beach before going for my appointment. if that wasn't the case, we don't know what happened. anyway, i think i'm going to live now. whew. that was tough!

PB = Productive Burp. It's a little different than vomiting. If something gets stuck, or you eat too much or too fast, you will feel a definite tightness in your chest. Everyone is a little different, but a common symptom is hypersalivation which banders call "slimming." Sooner or later you will be running to the sink or toilet or whatever is immediately available where you will burp loudly and throw up a seemingly large amount of food, mucus, and saliva. Afterwards you will feel much better. Eventually you will learn to control your eating as to avoid such episodes! Some of us learn more quickly than others--me being a slow learner with a great gag reflex!

I'm glad you had a slight unfiull. Any time anybody can't get fluids down they are too tight.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
