MissCat1970 1 Posted January 4, 2017 I was sleeved March 2016. SW 267 CW 211 GW 155. I feel like I should of lost much more weight than this. Once I went on the Atkins diet and lost 150 in a year. I am coming up on my year now and have only lost 56lbs. Others I know have lost about 100 by now. I am totally low carb and nothing else is coming off. I am a Diabetic with severe Neuropathy pain in many places but my feet are the worst. Which means I take Effexor and Neurontin. Both those drugs normally can cause weight gain. I am wondering if they are hindering my weight loss. Anyone else have this issue? Is there anything I can do other than stop taking those meds? On a bright side....My A1c is down to 5.9 from 9 so that is amazing and I am off all my Diabetic drugs. littlelamb3 16 Posted January 4, 2017 (edited) It could be affecting your weight loss. I am diabetic as well, I was on insulin and 2 oral drugs. I only take Metformin now as the glimepiride does cause weight gain, as well as the insulin. I would talk to your doctor to see what you can do and if there is another med you can take instead. You are very lucky to have your A1C down so much. I am not there yet, but diabetes runs in the family, whether your heavy/thin. Aggiemae 739 Posted January 4, 2017 I know that years of yoyo dieting has made losing weight slower and harder for me. I actually decided to have WLS after following a 1200 calorie a day plan for almost three months and only losing 5 pounds. I think the drugs you mentioned cause weight gain because people on them eat more calories. Ask your surgeon about your meds and slower weight loss, he/she will know if other patients have this concern. Consider keeping a two week food journal (keep track of carbs, Protein and fat) and review it with the NUT to see what you can change up. I know I started to lose more weight when I added fat to my diet.
Aggiemae 739 Posted January 4, 2017 Consider take a turmeric supplement for your neuropathy. My rheumatologist recommended it for inflammation and it's the only thing I take now.
fordtmacrae 21 Posted January 4, 2017 I'm insulin dependent and also have bad neuropathy in my feet. I can't take the prescription meds your on because I'm allergic to them. A pharmacist suggested I take Vitamin B-12 and Alpha Lipoic Acid. It took two months to kick in, but has reduced the neuropathy by 50%. Good luck. Aggiemae 739 Posted January 4, 2017 @@fordtmacrae most people already take a b complex supplement after WLS, lipotic acid is an antioxidant but it also helps metabolize glucose. My Dr thinks that all diabetics should take it. Have you ever tried turmeric capsules? Couldn't hurt, might help. I used to believe otherwise but in the past decade I have become a believer in herbs and Vitamins. I woke up with Bell's palsy about 2 weeks after my WLS, a week later I started on lysine and from then on my symptoms improved every day and other than slight weakness in my lower eye lid I was back to normal in 8 days. fordtmacrae 21 Posted January 4, 2017 I'll check about the tumeric capsules. Thank you for the info. I too didn't use to believe in herbal meds, do now.
miranda_perry 1 Posted January 6, 2017 I'm diabetic and I take mental health drugs that cause weight gain. I too wonder if they are keeping me from losing the last 50 pounds. I workout and my weight goes up and down. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
