Let's talk about FIBER

Recommended Posts

A good rule of thumb is 4gms fiber for every 100 calories you consume daily. Lottsa luck getting THAT in w/restriction.

Benefiber is an option but it takes a good month of using it regularly before you'll notice a difference.

My diet seriously lacks fiber now.. in my biology lab class, we're covering foods enzymes and blah blah, and had to make a chart of 25 foods we eat regularly in a week, then make observations on their fat, Protein, and fiber content.

Of 25 foods I eat regularly.. fat was low, protein was high, and NO FIBER. I didn't realize how fiber-lacking I was.

It explains a lot

I have benefiber, and going to have to start putting it in food myself. It's good in Water IMO, no taste, dissolves into nothing.

Wow - 4 grams per 100 calories!!!

I'm not having a "problem" [yet] but I was looking at Benefiber in the Grocery Store the other day. (It was on sale - $2.00 off )

Thanks

I bought some Fiber Choice chewable wafers ... I had been taking them in addition to my chewable Centrum multi-vitamins regularly after I was banded when I was able to resume eating "normally" however, it seems that since I got my first fill back on the 8th my taste-buds have changed a bit and now I can't stand either of them as they seem way too sour and disgusting! :)

Will be checking on that Benefiber too ...

I'M CLOGGED! No mincing words here! I'm concentrating so much on getting my Protein in; I have no room (literally) for the fiber! I bought roasted soy Beans last night; dried figs and some chick peas. I'm going to attempt to 'snack' during the day (ha!) in hopes of raising my fiber levels. I tried the Benefiber ONCE. The howls from my bowels were SCARY! But I don't think I have much choice; I need to get it in (if I want to get it out!). One more thought on the subject; I also have to remember that if I'm not putting much in, I can't expect alot to come out. :faint:

I had the same problem with BeneFiber, I sounded like a one-woman band. I use FiberSure instead. My husband is exactly the opposite--go figure. My doctor recommends UniFiber, but I can't find it locally.

Fibersure and BeneFiber are both tasteless/colorless/odorless. I dissolve mine in a Water bottle, hubby sprinkles his on his Cheerios. 1 tsp = 5gr fiber. Taking it easy the first week or two and slowly increasing the amount helps prevent gas.

Blooeyez,

My post-op instructions say NO fiber chewables or pills. They can get stuck in the band stoma and then they expand in stomach acid--a bad combination.:)

Well it's a good thing I haven't been taking them!! I had no clue they did that! :) Thanks so much for the heads up! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
