tracybshaw 13 Posted January 3, 2017 Hello. I am currently in the pre op process. Should have surgery on 3 months or so. I had planned on sleeve but surgeon is recommending RNY. I'm Still researching both. I have a new question. I was diagnosed late in life (40) with ADD . Honestly it was life changing once I found the medication for me. It's probably been as life changing as I anticipate this surgery will be. But the med I am on (Vyvanse) is long acting. I did not tolerate the short acting ones well at all. I'm concerned if I go the RNY route the medication will no longer work. Anyone care to share their experiences with medications absorption post RNY? Any med, but ADD med would be a bonus. kimberb 323 Posted January 3, 2017 From what I've learned after surgery your body does not absorb medication the same. I take an anti depressant that is timed released. I will have to change to the other type. Talk to your physician they will tell you what you need to do. bleonhardt 46 Posted January 3, 2017 My WLS team says you will not be able to take time released or long acting at all with the bypass but with sleeve some much needed time released meds will still be approved. Since you need that you should research which surgery would be best! Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App
MsPerisha 4 Posted January 3, 2017 Hi, I have RNY from 2011. I take the same medication as well. It works really well and kills my appetite. Honestly, I never had a problem with any medication. As a matter if fact they worked quite quickly!

EdenDesired 1 Posted January 5, 2017 I've had add my whole life and been on Med's for it. I've been on adderall Xr for years. My surgery date was 12/12/16 and I noticed that after the surgery the Med's didn't work as well but still worked a little. I just poured the granules into my mouth instead of taking it as a pill. I think I will probably be switching to the non xr after my next psychiatrist appt. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Djmohr 6,965 Posted January 5, 2017 If you chat with your surgeon he may make some recommendations for you. I had RNY and take several medications and the only one i have had a problem with is thyroid replacement. It isn't so much about the absorption as it has been about keeping up with the weight loss and regulating it. I am on a time released drug and that has worked perfectly. Pain medication however metabolizes much faster for me. Also, I have found with time, medications that I once could not take work great now. If you talk with your surgeon and your doctor they may be able to work with you on a ADD med that will work for you with the RNY.
