Hi everyone,

I had lapband surgery in 2009, and then it was removed in 2012. I had a huge issue with my gallbladder, which caused pancreatitis. I was in the hospital for a week, and also had been having complications with my band. The doctor at the time recommended that we take my band out, and do a revision. I feel like such a baby, I didn't feel like I was ready for a revision. I wish now I had done it.

Fast forward to 2017, and I have gained all the weight back I lost with my band. I turn 41 this month and have mild hypertension. I can't seem to get the weight off, I will do really well for a bit, and then gain it all back again. I remember when I had my band, I went through a depression, because I had made food such an important part of my life. It was a friend whose relationship with me was changed drastically. I suppose that's what I fear, feeling down and depressed. Or having complications with the surgery. I've heard such horror stories. Gah!

Tell me it's worth it. I'm 5'5" and weigh 302 pounds. I have four babies, I want to live to watch them grow up. My fear is holding me back a little bit. Part of me is determined to do whatever it takes. I just need to convince the other part.

Don't let YOU stand in the way, your biggest why is that you have four babies than need you! I haven't had the surgery, but after years of trying to get the weight off with no avail, I made the decision a couple months ago to do whatever it takes to life longer for my son. It took so long to get him, I'd do anything to be with him as long as I can. You're stronger than your negative thoughts! I'm certainly rooting for you ????

Uh-uh, no. It's up to you to determine whether it's worth it. I'll give you two pointers:

1. The answer is immediately above; and;

2. Get rid of the fractions. Commit either way. Which will it be?

It sounds to me as though you're not so much concerned with possible problems after surgery, but of making a commitment. Don't over think it.

I am 58 when I had this surgery 10 weeks ago. I've had nothing but complications sentence including an ulcer but I believe I'm finally coming out of the woods the ulcer treatment might be working which means I can expand what I can eat not how much but what. I weighed my highest .373 pounds I now weigh 290. I've had both my knees replaced I have arthritis everywhere you want to do this now you don't want to wait and suffer like I did you want to be able to enjoy doing things with your kids.

Our journeys are similar, just different timelines....I got my band in 2006, I still have it but it's coming out in the near future.

I've gained back everything I lost due to a combination of hypothyroidism and pregnancy and most importantly not following the rules like I should. It's hard for me to admit that...but I hadn't truly dealt with my emotional eating issues and that was a problem.

I developed reflux this last year and that started the ball rolling towards revision..and I've realized that I'm not the person I was 10 years ago. The stakes are higher.... I have a little boy who needs me, taking care of him means I need to take care of me and that is the most important thing. It's made all the difference in my commitment to my goal of being healthier...this time I'm making sure all the supports are in place (therapy, support groups, the works).

Try to not focus on the horror stories...they'll just freak you out(I totally looked at them when I was first making my decision to revise and realized they weren't doing me ANY good at all because I'm a worrywart)

Good luck with your decision :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
