10 days post op...question

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm new around here. I researched and researched and researched this procedure for a good two years and I feel like it only kind of prepared me for what it's actually like.

I am able to get a little over 32 oz of Water in and two 11 oz premiere Protein shakes in a day and from the morning of the hospital I've lost 11 lbs. Is this normal?! I feel like I haven't lost what I'm supposed to for some reason. It might be in my head, but I've had this anxious feeling like "what if this doesn't work for me?"

Also, I feel very low energy. I go back to work on the 9th and I'm worried I'm going to be yawning all day.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I would say you are probably losing faster than average. More than a pound a day? Crazy fast and don't expect to keep losing that fast as that is unlikely! There really isn't a "normal" rate of weight loss in the first several weeks. You and your body should be focused on healing and recovery, not how fast you can lose weight right now. The scale will do weird things in these first several weeks -- if it stresses you out, do your best to stay off the scale and just focus on getting in your liquids and Protein.< /p>

It sounds like you are close to where you need to be with liquid and protein, but keep pushing a little more each day.

It is very normal to be completely exhausted for several weeks after surgery. Some people aren't but most people are.

You will likely find you get a little more energy each day, especially as you get closer to your Fluid and protein goals. Rest when you need to and do a little walking when you can. If you aren't ready to go back to work on the 9th, take the time you need or maybe consider going back part-time for the first few days to ease into it. Good luck!

Edited because apparently I can't read.

Welcome, @@vsg_malexander!

I've lost 11 lbs. Is this normal?!

It's awesome! more than a pound a day?! It isn't magic, patience. IDK what your weight before surgery was, but heavier/high BMI people lose more at first

I feel like I haven't lost what I'm supposed to for some reason.

Looks to me like you've done amazing.

It might be in my head, but I've had this anxious feeling like "what if this doesn't work for me?"

Totally normal. After all, every other time you've lost weight it hasn't worked. So you've learned that "it never lasts" over time. BUT I encourage you to read the posts of vets here who are 1, 2, 3 years post-op. Discovering that they really did change their whole relationship with food and exercise will keep your head on straight.

Also, I feel very low energy.

Of course - you're having hardly any nutrition and you just had your insides carved out. You need to heal. I'm post-op day 11 and definitely have less energy than before surgery. I know when I went from clear to full liquids, I got a boost. Excited to go from full liquids to puree foods and get another shot of energy.

Don't be too hard on yourself!

Your weight loss is great, and it takes at least 6 weeks to recover from major surgery. You're going to feel the effects of it until you're fully healed. You should start feeling like your old self in a couple more weeks.

I average about a pound a day. Think of it...30 days out you'll be at 30 lbs at that rate! (just 5 more lbs and one week for me!)

Are you taking B12 Vitamins? It is a good source of energy.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement!!

Speaking of Vitamins.... I was an avid Vitamin taker before surgery but I haven't gotten the hang of it since I've come home from the hospital.

What is standard to take daily? I know this varies for everyone and I'm seeing my nut on Thursday, just wondering what is best for all of you.

My vitamins: adult Multivitamin, probiotic, Omega 3, Iron, Fiber, B12, Vitamin D-3, and hair skin and nails Vitamins and another one called moringa.

It may seem like a long list but all of it's in hopes of my teeth, skin, bones, digestive system and hair staying in good health post op.

All are pills except the Multivitamins and probiotic which are gummies. I'm 3 days post op but haven't had an issue swallowing pills. And yeah all at once usually in the morning! It's a routine I'm used to! Maybe it's a little overkill but I already have thin hair and I don't want it to get any thinner!

I could have studied for a decade and it wouldn't have prepared me for what happened to me. I got an unexpected infection ,I lost my taste, almost nothing tastes good . it's rebounded a little bit but not much, nothing tastes the same anymore.... sweet stuff is too sweet ,plus I developed an ulcer right at the surgery line that causes nausea over fullness and pain...... you can't study for that kind of stuff.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
