Question for diabetics

Recommended Posts

What do you do when your sugar is too low? My hubby has been off his medicine since the day before surgery. He was sleeved 12/21 and his sugar keeps going into the low 50's. He emailed his doctor and he's out on vacation and the doctor covering for him just told him not to take his medication, which he was already doing. He's still on full liquids and will just drink undiluted juice to bring it up. It's making him feel generally crappy though. Will this subside once he's back to food?

I am also a diabetic. I am type 1 and during the liquid side I just drank four ounces of juice or gatorade to get it back up. I went into my endocrinologist the same day of my post op visit and we made some major adjustments on my insulin pump. That was my toughest battle after surgery. Had to do s lot of temp basal at 50% or even off. Is he type 1 or 2?

I stopped taking my invokana once I went on liquids. I took that with my insulin but am off it now

I was told not to do juice or glucose tabs because they would just make it worse (and possibly cause dumping). Try drinking a Protein Shake if your sugar is too low.

I went low a bunch of times during the liquid phase. I would drink a bit of Gatorade or OJ or hot tea with a tsp of sugar. I do consume small amounts of sugar through out the day post op usually in my hot tea or from fruit. If I don't I get lows and life gets miserable.

My Surgeon prefers the sugar free diet. I do not tolerate sugar substitutes. I have to learn to live. I keep the sugars under 10g per serving. I have noticed that as time keeps passing, I don't need as much to keep my bs even.

Hopefully things will even out for him as well.

I'm type 2 and kept some Gatorade in the fridge just for that. I had my sugar dip a few times and just had a small amount. Brought me right out of it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
