smyleetn 55 Posted December 31, 2016 I notice a lot of people saying that they are drinking coffee. Is that decafe or caffeine? I stopped drinking caffeine (Diet Coke and coffee) about 6 weeks ago. I want caffeine but was told not to. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Clarevoyant 347 Posted December 31, 2016 I drink caffeinated coffee every day. Was told early on by my dr that as long as I get my fluids and Protein in each day I can have caffeinated coffee. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Sai 785 Posted December 31, 2016 Caffeinated. Pre and post op. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App
Coffeeguy 16 Posted December 31, 2016 No coffee would literally be a deal-killer for me! Not only my life, but part of my livelihood.
busybeebug 415 Posted December 31, 2016 I have coffee basically whenever I want to but I am not a heavy drinker. I did hold off until 2 weeks post op because my stomach was irritated and acidy even with a PPI. My thought is try a little, if it is not well received then try in a week or so. Basically it's how you try out a new food.
BelgianGuy 350 Posted December 31, 2016 I drink coffee almost everyday, tea as well. As long as you hydrate enough, I don't think it's a problem.
4MRB4PHOTO 3,900 Posted December 31, 2016 Dropped down to half caf then Decaf prior to surgery, then decaf, half caf and regular coffee post surgery as my stomach healed. Decaf could also be an irritant due to the acidity for some people. Follow your plan.
LittleBill 2,231 Posted December 31, 2016 Dropped down to half caf then Decaf prior to surgery, then decaf, half caf and regular coffee post surgery as my stomach healed. Decaf could also be an irritant due to the acidity for some people. Follow your plan. ^^^^^ This. Follow your plan. I was told to go completely decaf prior to surgery. So I did. Once I was post-op, they said it was fine to go back to caffeine coffee if I wanted. I drink a couple of cups in the morning, and often several cups of decaf throughout the day. GrandmaBee55 47 Posted December 31, 2016 I was Decaf pre-surgery and continue decaf post-surgery. Occasionally I have regular coffee if there is no decaf and I need a warm cup of coffee. However, I then increase my Water intake for the day. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted December 31, 2016 coffee hydrates people as well as Water does, so there is no need not to count it as fluids, or try to make up for it or something else. Probably 75% of my liquid intake is full test black coffee and has been for years, so if there were some sort of problem with caffeine and dehydration I should be a desiccated piece of dead leathery skin by now but I am perfectly healthy. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/06/30/milk-and-other-surprising-ways-to-stay-hydrated/ Coffee is acidic and can be hard on a sleeved stomach, especially a newly sleeved stomach, so that alone should be reason for caution, though. Kaylamh 144 Posted December 31, 2016 I had to be off caffeine pre-op, but the post-op caffeine was left up to me once I could get enough liquids in!
lkcnewbeginnings 77 Posted December 31, 2016 4 weeks post op and I'm having a small cup most days. I think it just depends on your tolerance. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using the BariatricPal App
Lucky2Lose 184 Posted December 31, 2016 I am drinking decaf..my surgical team said no caffeine for three months post op. I have found some great Decaf Beans I grind and it's taste is very close to caffeinated and so delicious, I may never go back to caffeinated.
