Nope, it's a real thing jack. After surgery, I could not tolerate the taste of plain Water, even though I was a big Water drinker prior to surgery for years and years. It tasted like pure metal. But about 2 months post op, that stopped and now I'm back to loving plain water again. It's a wild ride, just hang on and don't let go!

For the first time ever I have found that. At 3 months out I'm loving blueberries, I've never liked blueberries. Now I could eat them all day long.

Taste buds definitely change! I tried tuna today for the first time since surgery on Dec 6th and my whole mouth tasted like metal and fish, I used to love tuna! Also I noticed miracle whip tastes sweet to me now. Just keep trying different things to see what you like, I will follow my own advice too lol

It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. I remember in the hospital after RNY gastric bypass surgery, I could not drink the Water because it tasted very chlorinated. Eventually I found flavored water such as Crystal Light to work O.K. Many experience problems drinking Protein shakes. I hated them. But in the beginning I drank them, three 16-ounce Protein Shakes a day, in order to meet my Protein requirements. You do not have to like Protein Shakes only tolerate them. There are many varieties of protein shakes available today. Experiment until you can find one you can tolerate. Over time as your meal volume increases, if you concentrate on consuming high protein meals, you can begin to reduce your reliance on protein shakes. I went from 3 a day, down to 2, down to 1 and eventually none when I reached 1 cup per meal at a year and a half post-op.

There are many different types of formulations on protein shakes. I would recommend that you keep experimenting until you find one that you can tolerate. You don't have to like it, just tolerate it. I used Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Creme) powder blended with Water and a half a banana. That worked for me. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, you might try premixed Isopure.

I liked all the Premier Protein shakes before surgery, but after surgery I can't stand the taste either. I use GENEPRO unflavored Protein Powder. It has 30 grams of Protein. I like to mix with SF hot coco, herbal tea or broth.

Every food is a new challenging experience. I had milk intolerance for the first time in my life after Modified RNY surgery but now (over a year later) I can tolerate small amount of fat free or 1% at the most. Cant eat beef except for small amounts of hamburger, ham, Chinese food, BBQ, Smoked meats or cured of any kind, No battered foods even if baked this includes tempura. Of course no pizza, potatoes, noodles, or rice except for 1 teaspoon full in surrounded by meat and inexpensive 0 fat gravy. But the great thing is I crush up nuts and keep them in snack baggies I take with me when going out or reading in bed and know I put back 20 g of Protein without even thinking about it. I just make a mental list of what is a no go and like eating salt, sugar or carbonated drinks I just stay away. The hardest thing for me now to stay away from is craving chicken on salad and it just doesn't work so I just have to add nuts and cheese to boost Proteins instead of using meat. Also I have been supplementing diet with refried Beans, pork and Beans, northern, and butter beans to add Proteins I just watch carbs. I know this is learning curve. But since the holiday I have lost another 6 lbs this month and I am focusing on loosing another 8 lbs to goal. This will be a great year.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
