10 days post opp and all is going well. My biggest challenge right now is extreme fatigue. I'm getting 100+ grams of Protein and all my Water in, averaging around 600 calories. At first I had good energy but for the past three days I have a tough time waking around 8 in the morning and have been napping around 11 am and again at 3 pm and can't keep my eyes open past 10 pm! My three kids and husband are home on holiday break and feel like I'm sleeping away our remaining days together.

Kids go back to school and we both head back to work on Tuesday and am worried about how I'm going to function with the daily grind. I just started purees today and daily Multivitamins, Calcium and B12 so I'm hoping that will help.

My question for the group is how long does the "zombie" phase last, and is there anything I can do to help power through? Please tell me there's a light at the end of the tunnel...really missing caffeine right now.

Have you had surgery before? Every surgery I've had I'm tired and worn out for about 6 weeks. Then add the complete lack of nutrition and calories to this particular surgery, and you have the double whammy.

What I'm saying is it generally takes 6 weeks or so to recover from any surgery. But one day you're going to wake up and think "Hey! I feel almost human today!" And after that it only gets better. Take it slow and easy, be kind to yourself, and ease back into it. Even work. If you can only do half days for a week, by all means do it. You'll start feeling like your old self soon! Promise.

I had a lot of fatigue requiring naps until I was on solid food for a week or so. Your body is telling you it needs rest for healing. Work may be challenging.

I went back to work after 2 weeks, and yes, fatigue was a big thing....didn't matter that I was getting my Vitamins in, etc...was just pooped. But just muddle through, try to get as much sleep as you can. Also, once you start being able to get more movement in, that helps too. You're just recovering from a surgery, so don't feel like there's something wrong...the energy will eventually come back. Somedays it's almost crazy energy, but keep following docs orders, and you will be feeling better!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
