Hi everyone

I hope the silly season is treating you well.

Thought I'd drop this on here and see if anyone else can relate to the problem/s

I got sleeved in October. Lots of adjustment and getting used to the new regime as we all did/do

Got to mid December and was planning my Christmas dinner. Small but full of flavorsome goodies.

Dec 19th comes around and this bunny is starting to feel a bit unwell.... Cold hands, cold feet, nausea and the final straw, lower back pain on the left..... Been here before, I'm going into shock. I know what it is as have had them many times over the years... Kidney stones.... Joy

Down to the local A&E, a CT scan and confirmation that I have 3 of the little (huge) gits in the left kidney and they are too big to pass. Transferred to another hospital for emergency surgery as they are starting to cause internal problems for me.

Finally they found me a space in the operation list on the 23rd. In all this time I've been on a drip and nil by mouth in case there is a sudden slot I can be put into.

Stay with me, almost to the point :)

I got released on the 24th with bucket loads of pain killers and antibiotics.

When I got home I was feeling a bit knocked about and somewhat tender, anyone will tell you that they remove most kidney stones without making any "extra" holes in the body and just use the one that mother nature provided...........I thought to myself that hey, perhaps I lost a few pounds in there

Wrong.... Came out 4lb heavier!!! Putting this down to the drip, the other meds and possible Water retention from the op... Maybe?

Anyway. Christmas dinner was a mini bowl of porridge and my glass of wine turned into loads of Water. My feeling towards food had returned to the way I felt the week following my sleeve and it feels like I've had to start all over again and I've only just had a normal meal today and only managed a couple of mouthfuls..

The main question is... Has anyone else been in a similar position of having been taken into hospital for any emergency op and how did you feel afterwards?

Sorry, bit of a longer than usual one for me

Happy new year to you all..

Oh man that's no good, I am for weeks post op and was just readmitted for low blood pressure and dehydration and I had for lites of Fluid pumped in to me and I was suffering from dehydration and I had four litres of Fluid pumped in to me. I still feel rough but nowhere near as someone who just had stones removed. Good luck your recovery and have a great new year.

I will be able to fully respond to your question after my abdominal wall repair (giant hernia with 7 inches of my colon stuck in it) after 1/3/17. :-/

What a rotten way to come into Christmas. So sorry! I am guessing you're still retaining a lot of Fluid since your kidney was messed up. Keep drinking as much as you can to help flush it. Did they put you on lasix or anything l like that?

At almost 6 months post op I just spent most of November on unrelated health issue in hospital -27 days straight! It was very hard to get sufficient diet in, even on days where i had no restrictions for procedures. I had a pretty major surgery and minor procedure. I definitely felt that it was a transition to get back on schedule, but I was very motivated to get my Protein and Vitamin levels back up. So, I would just recommend trying to get back to schedule and at minimum prioritize your Protein Shakes and Water. Best of luck!

Yikes! No emergency operations here, although I had my own chair in the ER for a while for being sewn up and such when I was a kid...

I have a kidney stone sitting in a backwater of my kidney like a tiny time bomb just waiting to go off. I have known about it for a little over three years now. When they found it, it was classified as "small" at 6mm. That's a quarter inch in American lingo! So we just sit and wait.

I hope it all comes out well for you (so to speak) and that the pain and misery is alleviated soon.

I was also in hospital for two weeks post op with a non WLS problem and gained over 10 pounds due to the IV fluids. All the Fluid weight, plus 5 pounds of FAT came off after I came home. Hang in there.

Many thanks everyone for your replies and encouragement.

The only meds they gave we were for pain control and antibiotics

The weight gain has reversed now and is going in the opposite direction :)

It seems that surgery has the unwanted effect of weight gain for a while

Again, many thanks

Little Bill mine were 6, 8 and 9mm and they found lots of gravel followed by 3 more of a similar size......

They are ok until they move and block the normal running of things........ Then, as I'm sure you're aware, Life becomes a little uncomfortable. I have to go back and have a stent removed in about 6 weeks... What a pleasure that will be......

I'm sorry to hear you had this experience, sounds rough!

I've not had this but I would imagine the gain is temporary and related more to fluids than anything else. And you seem to have already started the reverse so that must be a relief for you :)

Hope you feel better soon x

My husband says that passing a stone is the closest thing to child birth a man can experience.

He also says that if men had to give birth the human race would be extinct because none of them would be willing to go through that much pain more than once.

I can remember talking to a nurse who had given birth 3 times and had kidney stones once.... She would rather give birth to three more kids than go through stones again

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
