The no drinking rule is designed for a lifetime but you get used to it. However not everyone follows it. I did not have an antacid after surgery and had no issues. Everyone is different.

The reason they don't want you to drink during and for a minimum of 30 minutes after eating is so you don't end up washing through all the food you consumed too fast.

If you drink while eating, you'll end up able to eat more since you're washing food through your stomach at a faster pace than if it had little extra moisture and was having to break down the (hopefully) dense Proteins and complex carbs without liquids (relying on stomach acids to do the hard work).

If you drink right after or within a half hour or so, it has the same effect as drinking while eating; it breaks down the food faster since it's basically just turning the stomach contents into a slurry instead of letting the stomach do the work.

The no drinking rule is both to help you feel full longer, and to prevent you from overeating.

So yes, it's for life, unless you want to start regaining weight. ;)

What stage are you in Em? Tues I start purée so I'd either have to strain the Soup or purée the soup/chicken.

Stage 2B is what my NUT is calling it. Basically I can have ricotta/string cheese (skim), yogurts, broths, and chicken breast (moist). Not on to purée yet but I find it weird that I can have chicken

I follow that rule the first couple of months but I no longer follow it. It is not normal not to drink while eating. I have no problem with that at all. And I have been very successful since surgery which was a little over year ago. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all type of plan when it comes to bodies or personalities. Do what works for you! There's always more than one way to get where you wish to go. I am the kind of person that does it her own way. I started out following the bariatric gospel on weight loss and started feeling quite ill. When I trusted my intuition and started eating what I knew my body wanted the weight dropped off quickly and I felt physically much much better.

My program only requires a 45 minute delay after eating. I was told it was okay to drink right up to the point of eating. I got used to it pretty quickly.

As you get further out the eating and drinking is up to you honestly. Most of the time drinking is going to make you too full.

I take a few sips now and then when eating. I do portion all my food so there is no chance of over eating.

It isn't a forever thing, but you will find you don't want or need to do it in the long term.

I suggest taking the PPI and the antacids for the first 6 to 9 months until your body adjusts. I didn't take them consistently and it is something I regret.

@@OutsideMatchInside how has taking the antacids inconsistently hurt you? I haven't been taking them every day and im 3 months out. I only take them when i feel i need to. I didn't think that was bad. Have i messed up?

I would randomly get GERD if I accidently over ate. I never had GERD before surgery and it hurts in a really weird way.

I just think take them. Taking them won't hurt anything. Not taking them you take the chance on hurting.

It was just an easy situation to avoid so I wish I followed Dr orders on iy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
