Advice pre weight loss

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I am still awaiting my GP to send my application which should be done on the 6th so I know I have a long wait ahead of me. I started slimming world back in September and so far have lost 18pounds should I continue with this or now wait until i have my meeting with the hospital as I am unsure if they will take into consideration the weight I have already lost.

Are you hoping to have WLS on the NHS?

Whats your height and starting weight?

What are your co-morbidities?

How long have you been overweight and how old are you?

Kate

p:s: Give people time to answer, especially in the UK support group, especially over the holidays ;)

Hi. i am 31 and also have pcos and struggled with my weight all my life. i weigh 19 stone 5lbs, height 5.7. otherwise i have no co-morbidities. My GP referred me to the NHS hospital in August and i had my first appointment in September. I met with a surgeon and dietitian in November, got accepted and now i am having my pre-assessment on 4th Jan. im not sure about the weight you already lost, but once you have your appointment at the hospital they expect you to either keep your weight stable or lose.

I went down the NHS route. Took me 2 years to get to the operation but it was well worth it. When you do the course and the weigh ins you will be able to fire as many questions as you like and I do recommend that you ask any that you have. It may seem like a long time from start to finish but I found that I was more prepared for it than many people who have it done privately.

I had mine done in October 2016 at Kings College Hospital and have since lost 70lb. I've dropped two of my 3 blood pressure pills. My medication for my type 2 has been halved and my sleep apnea problem has eased of considerably.

The whole process is not without its problems. There will be mental and physical discomfort for a while but hell, it's worth it :)

You are very lucky to get it on NHS. In West of Scotland you need to be diabetic or sleep apnea. Otherwise forget it!! Or private. Used my husbands pension.

I started my journey in mid August 2016 when i went to my GP to be referred to the bariatric clinic in the hospital. i'm a 'healthy' obese women with no comorbids. after getting a green light for surgery, i called the hospital yesterday to ask for a surgery date. they gave me 16th March (with warning that it can be changed...typical NHS) So if surgery will be in March, thats 7 months from beginning to end under the NHS. not too bad.

You are very lucky with your local NHS criteria. Many parts of the UK it's virtually impossible! Good luck x

I qualified on many health issues including both of those you mentioned. Although, I must say. like everyone, I'd rather have had my health instead lol. Top those off with 8 heart ops (not weight related and the surgery was recommended by heart specialists as well) and add one or two more minor things and I had a full house lol.

The CPAP machine is now on its lowest setting and Diabetes meds have been halved so life is improving

Yes, I'm lucky to get it on the NHS ;)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
